Maintenon Castle is situated on the banks of the River Eure, in the commune of Maintenon in the French department of Eure-et-Loir, in the Centre-Val de Loire region. In 1674, it was acquired by Françoise d’Aubigné, ‘Madame de Maintenon’, mistress and later secret wife of Louis XIV.
