The Château de Maintenon stands on the banks of the Eure, within the commune of Maintenon in the French département of Eure-et-Loir, in the région of Centre-Val de Loire. In 1674, it was acquired by Françoise d'Aubigné — "Madame de Maintenon" — mistress and later secret wife of Louis XIV.

History
Rising at the confluence of the Eure and the Voise, the château de Maintenon is one of the most singular residences of the Grand Siècle. Neither the pomp of Versailles nor the austerity of a fortress: Maintenon occupies an intermediate space — that of an aristocratic seat shaped by several centuries of successive remodelling, bearing within it the visible strata of French history. Medieval towers stand alongside Renaissance façades and classical interiors, offering the attentive visitor a rare architectural journey through time. What truly distinguishes Maintenon is the enduring imprint of the marquise who shares its name. Françoise d'Aubigné — who became Madame de Maintenon and, later, the morganatic wife of Louis XIV — transformed this estate into an exceptional domain. She set in motion ambitious works here, among them the celebrated aqueduct commissioned by the Roi-Soleil to feed the fountains of Versailles: a titanic undertaking left unfinished by the wars of the Ligue d'Augsbourg, its towering arches still striding across the gardens like a monument to royal excess. The experience of visiting is particularly rich, owing to the juxtaposition of atmospheres: the interior apartments preserve furnishings and decoration from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries of remarkable authenticity, while the formal gardens, laid out in the spirit of Le Nôtre, unfold in ordered parterres between the moats and waterways. The walk along the Eure, lined with ancient trees, lends the estate an almost melancholic serenity. Maintenon captivates the history enthusiast and the lover of living heritage alike: the château has belonged for several generations to the family de Noailles, who tend to its preservation with great care. This familial continuity bestows upon the place a warmth rarely found among France's great historic houses, far removed from any museum-like coolness. One still senses the presence of those who once lived here — in the creak of the aged parquet floors and the soft light filtering through the tall windows.
Architecture
The Château de Maintenon presents a composite elevation that faithfully reflects the successive stages of its construction. The oldest sections, dating from the twelfth to the fourteenth century, are expressed in the cylindrical towers with their thick rubble walls of flint and limestone, characteristic of the military architecture of the Paris Basin. The Renaissance wing, erected in the early sixteenth century, is distinguished by its mullioned windows, its ornate dormers and the use of white ashlar stone quarried locally, lending the façade a remarkable luminosity. The principal residential range, remodelled in the seventeenth century, embraces the classical vocabulary of the Louis XIII–Louis XIV period: steeply pitched slate roofing, rusticated quoins and regularly rhythmed casement windows. The water-filled moats, fed by the Eure and the Voise, partially encircle the building, deepening its picturesque character and providing a spectacular stage setting as one approaches the château. The interior retains apartments with period decoration: Louis XIV boiseries, monumental marble chimney pieces, French-style painted ceilings and several seventeenth-century canvases connected with the circle of the marquise de Maintenon. The grand salon and the bedchamber of Madame de Maintenon form the centrepieces of any visit. The formal French gardens, arranged in terraces descending towards the river, belong to the tradition of classical garden design of the second half of the seventeenth century. The box-embroidered parterres, the clipped hornbeam allées and the ornamental water features compose a coherent ensemble in which the monumental arches of the unfinished aqueduct provide a backdrop of a visual grandeur unmatched anywhere else in France.
