History
Set on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean in La Teste-de-Buch, at the gateway to the Bay of Arcachon, Villa Téthys is one of five villas designed by the great architect Roger-Henri Expert in this region between 1924 and 1927. Far from the often conventional seaside picturesque of the period, Expert's architectural vision was remarkably coherent, combining ancient references, Palladian sobriety and a nascent Art Deco sensibility. What immediately sets the Villa Téthys apart from its contemporaries is its organisation around a vast central rotunda room - a motif borrowed from both classical Greek architecture and the Palladian tradition of Venetian villas. This central space gives the building a quasi-monumental dignity that is unexpected in a seaside villa, while at the same time carefully orchestrating the circulation of light and visual perspectives towards the sea. The villa has two facades with very distinct characteristics. To the west, the seafront opens generously onto the Atlantic horizon, fully embracing its dialogue with the immensity of the ocean. To the east, a more restrained and intimate façade opens onto a regular garden designed by Roger-Henri Expert himself, combining pruned vegetation, stone architecture and water features in a spirit of classical rigour tempered with Mediterranean grace. The visitor experience is that of a total work of art: architecture, landscape and the art of gardens form an inseparable whole. Visitors sensitive to the architectural history of the Roaring Twenties will find a rare synthesis between the revisited genius of Antiquity and the quiet modernity of the inter-war years. The changing light of the Atlantic coast, depending on the time of day and the season, dresses the volumes of the rotunda and the lines of the garden differently, offering constantly renewed impressions. Protected as a Historic Monument since 2001, Villa Téthys remains a precious testimony to the seaside lifestyle of the French haute bourgeoisie in the 1920s, and a discreet masterpiece by an architect who is too often overlooked by the general public.
Architecture
The Villa Téthys is an eloquent illustration of Roger-Henri Expert's synthesis of several architectural traditions. The central feature of the building is a vast rotunda, a circular space that is at once a lounge, a reception room and the heart of the residence. This fundamental geometric shape simultaneously evokes the Pantheon of Roman antiquity, the circular Greek temples - the tholoi - and the central rooms of Palladio's villas, notably the famous Villa Rotonda in Vicenza. The rotunda gives the villa an almost ceremonial presence that is rare in the seaside setting. The villa's bipolar organisation is one of its most intelligent features. The western facade, facing the Atlantic Ocean, is open and light, with large windows and a sober design that allows the sea light to penetrate generously into the central rotunda. In contrast, the eastern facade, which overlooks the regular garden designed by Expert himself, is more intimate and contained, where the built architecture resonates with the vegetation, ponds and decorative elements of the formal garden. This duality between opening up to the infinity of the sea and withdrawing into an ordered, domestic space is one of the most fertile tensions in the work. The materials used, typical of the quality constructions of the inter-war period on the Atlantic coast, probably combine rendering on the facade treated in light-coloured stone, tiles or slate on the roof, and decorative elements in dressed stone for the surrounds and mouldings. The ornamental vocabulary remains classic and sober, without the decorative excesses of the Parisian Art Deco style, but with the distinction characteristic of Expert's work, where each detail is thought out in relation to the whole.
