Buried beneath the garrigues of Rognes, this Gallo-Roman villa reveals the splendour of the Roman Provincia: polychrome mosaics, private baths and domestic architecture from the Early Empire all within easy reach.
Just a few kilometres from Aix-en-Provence, in the Pays d'Aix that the Romans called the Provincia per excellence, the commune of Rognes conceals beneath its limestone soil the remains of a Gallo-Roman villa that has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1937. This archaeological site bears witness to the intense Romanisation of Provence in the first centuries AD, in a region where the density of villae rustiques and urbanae was among the highest in southern Gaul. The villa at Rognes belongs to this category of large state-owned farms that structured the rural territory of the Narbonnaise. Built around a pars urbana reserved for the master of the house and a pars rustica dedicated to agricultural production, it perfectly illustrates the model of the Roman country house, combining aristocratic comfort with agricultural profitability. The opus signinum floors, fragments of tegulae and traces of a hypocaust discovered on the site attest to a remarkable standard of living for a provincial estate. What makes this site particularly valuable is its setting in a Provençal landscape that has remained virtually unchanged since ancient times: the wooded hills with downy oaks and Aleppo pines, the fertile fields facing south, the likely access to a water source - all criteria that the Roman agronomists Columella and Varron recommended precisely for the location of a prosperous villa. The visitor can thus mentally superimpose the ancient landscape onto the present-day territory. For the archaeology enthusiast, the visit offers a rare immersion in the daily life of the Gallo-Roman landed aristocracy. Far removed from the great urban monuments of Arles or Nîmes, this site exudes an intimacy and authenticity that only places with little media coverage can still provide. It's here, in the silent stones and fragments of ancient soil, that we get a glimpse of the ordinary - yet luxurious - life of a notable person in the Provincia in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD.
The villa at Rognes is part of the classical model of the axial-plan villa romana, as developed throughout southern Gaul under the direct influence of Italic models. The general layout distinguishes the pars urbana - the lordly residence - from the pars rustica, the space given over to agricultural activities and workers' housing. This functional division is typical of most of the large villas in the Pays d'Aix. The excavated remains reveal walls built in opus incertum or small-scale limestone, a material abundant in the quarries of the Rognes region, renowned since Antiquity for the quality of their stone. Fragments of frescoed plaster, typical of the 2nd Pompeian style adapted to the provinces, suggest a meticulous interior decoration. The probable presence of a hypocaust heating system in the bathrooms testifies to the level of comfort achieved by the occupants. The roofs were covered with tegulae and terracotta imbrices, the remains of which are often the first surface clues to the location of these sites. The architectural ensemble would have been organised around a peristyle courtyard opening onto gardens and cultivated terraces, following the model found in large contemporary villas in the region, such as those discovered at Velaux and Peynier. The total surface area of the built estate could have been several thousand square metres, including storage areas for oil and wine, settling ponds and wine presses, all essential elements of any large-scale Provencal farm in the imperial era.
