History
In the heart of the Normandy bocage, a few leagues from Mont Saint-Michel, the Vieux Pont de Ducey crosses the Sélune with the elegant sobriety that characterises engineering structures of the early 17th century. Built at the dawn of the reign of Louis XIII, it links the towns of Ducey and Poilley on one of the most emblematic rivers in the south of La Manche, once renowned for its wild salmon runs. Its low, elongated silhouette, punctuated by several semi-circular arches, is reflected in the rushing waters of the Sélune with a natural symmetry that photographers and walkers never tire of capturing. This bridge embodies a discreet but essential page in the history of Norman communication routes. At a time when royal roads were beginning to structure the region, water crossings were key points for trade, pilgrimages and troop movements. The Vieux Pont de Ducey, located on a link between the Avranchin and the inland Cotentin regions, played this role for centuries, long before modern roads replaced it. Architecture
The Vieux Pont de Ducey features the formal characteristics typical of early 17th-century Norman masonry structures: a structure with several semi-circular arches, resting on thick piers fitted with triangular fore- and afterbays designed to split the current and reduce hydraulic pressure during floods. The deck, slightly curved in the shape of a humpback as was customary at the time, allowed rainwater to run off quickly and was more resistant to loads. The facings are made of local granite and sandstone, materials that are abundant in the nearby Armorican massif, carefully assembled by local masons who are well-versed in these techniques. The low, massive stone railings delineate the paved roadway, reflecting a concern for both function and aesthetics. The chisels of the piers have a sober profile, with no superfluous ornamentation, in keeping with the austerity of Norman civil construction of this period, far removed from the exuberant Baroque that was flourishing at the same time in southern Europe. A few traces of cunettes or pedestrian shelters may still be discernible on the widest piers, a common feature on bridges used by mixed cart and pedestrian traffic. The total length of the structure, determined by the width of the Sélune at this point, is estimated at around forty metres, with a carriageway width of around four to five metres, which is consistent with the standards for rural bridges of the period.
