History
Standing on the River Rance like a ribbon of granite stretched between two green banks, the Old Bridge of Dinan is one of the most evocative images of medieval Brittany. In the shadow of the ramparts that crown the upper town, it has for centuries linked the port district to the surrounding countryside, guiding travellers, merchants and pilgrims in a timeless procession. Its sober silhouette, faithfully following the curve of the river, commands instant respect from those who see it from the banks. What makes the Vieux Pont truly unique is the way in which it is integrated into Dinan's urban landscape. Unlike so many engineering structures that have been altered or denatured over the centuries, it retains much of its original appearance: round arches carved out of Breton granite, sturdy piers with tapered forebays to split the floodwaters of the Rance, and a slightly domed deck giving the characteristic humpback profile of medieval bridges. The whole structure gives an impression of permanence and humility, far removed from the splendour of the great cathedrals, but deeply rooted in the daily lives of the people of Dinan. The visit is structured around two complementary perspectives. On the bridge itself, you walk across the granite slabs worn by generations of footsteps, gazing out over the Rance, which stretches lazily downstream before widening into a ria. From the banks or the gardens below, the overall view reveals the harmony of the structure, framed by the tall half-timbered houses of the port of Dinan and the foliage covering the steep slopes of the valley. Photographers and painters will be delighted here at any time of year. The natural and urban setting that surrounds the bridge adds to its charm. The port area, also protected as a historic monument, retains the atmosphere of an unspoilt medieval village, with its taverns, craftsmen's workshops and trading warehouses converted into restaurants and galleries. Architecture
The Vieux Pont de Dinan is a medieval-style arch structure built mainly of Breton granite, a material that is omnipresent in the region's architecture and particularly well-suited to hydraulic constraints thanks to its resistance to erosion and variations in humidity. The structure rests on several massive piers, the upstream side of which has tapering triangular forebays to deflect the current and protect the foundations during the seasonal flooding of the River Rance. The semi-circular arches, inherited from the Romanesque tradition, give the whole structure a robust and solemn appearance. The longitudinal profile of the bridge has a slight bulge at its centre - the famous "humpback" typical of medieval bridges - which facilitates the drainage of rainwater and reinforces the structural stability of the roadway. The width of the deck, sufficient to allow two carts to pass when it was in full use, reflects the demands of river and land-based trade that the structure had to meet. The ashlars are carefully adjusted and the joints filled with lime mortar, in accordance with the masonry practices in force in ducal Brittany. The bridge is set in an exceptional natural site: recessed into the green valley of the Rance, it is flanked by wooded banks that amplify the effect of perspective and visually isolate the structure from the surrounding modernity. Unlike some fortified medieval bridges in the region, no superstructure - guards, chapel or watchtower - seems to have been built over the deck. The bridge focuses on pure architectural functionality, giving it a discreet, timeless elegance that is characteristic of the Breton building genius.
