On the edge of the Berry region, the remains of the Neolithic and Protohistoric camp at Moulins-sur-Céphons provide rare evidence of the first human communities in the Centre-Val de Loire region, and have been protected as a Historic Monument since 1982.
Nestling in the gentle, wooded landscape of the Indre department, the prehistoric camp at Moulins-sur-Céphons is one of the few listed open-air sites in the department, offering archaeology enthusiasts and prehistory buffs a window onto millennia of human occupation. Its inclusion on the Monuments Historiques list in 1982 testifies to the exceptional heritage value of this discreet site, where the relief of the ground still preserves traces of an occupation spanning the Neolithic to Protohistory periods. This type of camp - which archaeologists sometimes refer to as an enclosure or oppidum, depending on the period concerned - represents one of the oldest forms of collective settlement known in France. In the Berry region, several similar sites have been identified, testifying to a remarkable density of prehistoric occupation in this crossroads region, crossed by the valleys of the Creuse and Indre rivers and their tributaries. The Moulins-sur-Céphons camp is part of this network of ancient settlements that made Berry a strategic territory from the dawn of agriculture. A visit to the site, necessarily contemplative and attentive, reveals its secrets to those who know how to read the landscape: the gentle undulations of the land, the fossilised embankments and the breaks in the slope betray the location of ancient ditches and earthen ramparts, built by communities that had already mastered the collective organisation of work. The absence of any visible buildings gives the site a singular, almost abstract atmosphere, inviting us to make a real effort of imagination to recreate in our minds the life that took place there. The surrounding natural environment, with its hedged farmland and small rivers typical of the southern Berry region, is no stranger to the choice of location for this camp: visual control of the territory, proximity to water and ease of defence were decisive criteria for prehistoric populations. Today, the site can be visited in almost total tranquillity, far from the mass tourist circuits, for an authentic experience of contact with the origins of French rural civilisation.
The prehistoric camp at Moulins-sur-Céphons belongs to the category of hilltop or promontory enclosures typical of the Neolithic and protohistoric periods in central France. Its architecture, built entirely of perishable materials and earth, is radically different from the stone constructions that followed: the main structure of the site is made up of embankments and ditches, now largely levelled by erosion and successive agricultural operations. The layout of the camp probably takes the form of an oval or sub-rectangular enclosure, in accordance with the typologies recognised for Berrichon camps of this period. The original ditches, dug into the local limestone and clay, could be several metres deep and wide, creating earthen ramparts flanking the main entrance. The internal surface area of the enclosure, estimated at several hectares, was sufficient to accommodate temporary or permanent housing, storage structures and communal areas. The absence of durable building materials - cut stone, brick and mortar were unknown to the Neolithic builders of this region - means that the architecture of wood, cob and earth has disappeared entirely. The remains that are currently visible can be reduced to topographical micro-reliefs, which can be read from aerial photographs or in low-angled sunlight. This architecture of the invisible, which is typical of prehistoric sites on the plains, makes it a particularly legible monument, accessible only to initiates capable of deciphering its subtle signs.
