Three gallery dolmens nestling in Mané-Kervilor, in La Trinité-sur-Mer: an exceptional Neolithic megalithic complex, listed as a Historic Monument, bearing witness to the sacred density of the Carnac area over 5,000 years ago.
Just a stone's throw from the famous alignments at Carnac, the Mané-Kervilor site conceals one of the most intriguing groups of gallery dolmens in Morbihan. These three Neolithic funerary monuments, erected some five to six millennia ago, form a rare grouping that bears witness to intense, organised human occupation on this coastal fringe of the Gulf of Morbihan. Far from the tourist hustle and bustle of the great alignments, Mané-Kervilor offers an intimate and almost silent encounter with the world of the megalith builders. Each of the three dolmens has a typical "corridor" or "gallery" structure: a long access corridor paved with side slabs leads to a burial chamber covered with large orthostats supporting one or more roofing tables. This monumental architecture, built without any binders or metal, is based on a remarkable mastery of stone mechanics and a social organisation capable of mobilising dozens, even hundreds of individuals. The granite blocks, quarried nearby, reveal an intimate knowledge of the local geological substratum. What distinguishes Mané-Kervilor from other Breton megalithic sites is precisely the juxtaposition of three distinct buildings in a limited space. This grouping suggests a funerary and ceremonial function, probably linked to ancestor worship, a central practice in Atlantic Neolithic societies. Ancient excavations have unearthed human bones and a few ceramics, confirming the sepulchral use of these structures. The natural setting reinforces the power of the site: at La Trinité-sur-Mer, between dunes, moors and a jagged coastline, the changing light of Brittany plays on the granite surfaces and gives the stones an almost organic presence. In the early hours, when the morning mist envelops the dolmens, the atmosphere becomes spellbinding. This site is as much for the prehistory enthusiast as for the walker in search of silence and historical depth.
The three dolmens at Mané-Kervilor belong to the category of megalithic burials known as "covered gallery" or "covered walkways", an architectural form characteristic of the Neolithic period in Morbihan. Each monument consists of a relatively long access corridor - up to six to ten metres long - lined with vertically-standing slabs (orthostates) and covered with large horizontal tables (cover tables). This corridor opens onto a larger burial chamber, whose ceiling height can exceed one and a half metres, allowing a bent adult to enter. The materials used are exclusively local granite, a stone abundant in the Morbihan subsoil and renowned for its exceptional resistance to bad weather. The blocks, rough-cut or very slightly squared, have irregular surfaces on which traces of schematic engravings can sometimes be seen - crest motifs, stylised polished axes - typical of Armorican megalithic decorations. These ornaments, which are difficult to see with the naked eye without skimming light, provide valuable clues to Neolithic funerary symbolism. The juxtaposition of three distinct structures on the same site gives Mané-Kervilor an original spatial organisation. The dolmens have slightly different orientations, with some corridors facing the rising sun of the solstice, in keeping with a well-documented solar architectural practice in Breton monuments. The whole complex probably originally lay under a mound of earth and dry stone, which partially concealed the structures, leaving only the entrances to the corridors visible. Erosion over several millennia has removed the lithic masses, giving the dolmens their current appearance of stone skeletons standing on the moor.
