Perched above the village of Abondance, in the Chablais region of Haute-Savoie, the terrace, listed as a Historic Monument since 1949, is one of the most striking natural vantage points in the Northern Alps. From its dominant position, you can see the steep-sided Abondance valley, the lush green mountain pastures rising to the summits, and the slate roofs of the medieval abbey below - a picture that has hardly changed since the Middle Ages. The esplanade itself adopts an irregular quadrangular layout, adapting to the constraints of the sloping terrain typical of Alpine settlements. The ground, traditionally made up of pebbles and flat-laid limestone slabs, has a slight incline towards the valley to ensure the natural drainage of rainwater and snowmelt - an essential constraint in a mountain environment subject to high levels of annual rainfall. Some ashlar fencing or balustrading may border the space, marking the boundary between the esplanade and the sloping ground. The ensemble is in keeping with the stylistic continuity of Savoyard monastic architecture of the late Middle Ages, marked by a concern for sobriety and integration into the landscape rather than decorative ostentation.
