A logistical vestige of the German Occupation in La Manche, this maintenance site for motorised vehicles reveals the industrial side of the V1 war - intact and striking.
In the heart of the Cotentin peninsula, in Saussemesnil, lies a silent and extremely rare witness to the Second World War: a German logistics complex entirely dedicated to the maintenance of motorised land vehicles. Far from the coastal blockhouses and artillery batteries that dot the Normandy coastline, this site embodies the little-known underside of the Nazi war machine - its workings, its workshops and its underground logistics. What makes this site truly unique is its exceptional state of preservation. The single and double garages, with their inspection pits that are still accessible, seem to have survived the decades untouched by the ravages of time. Here, there's no reconstruction or museographic staging: the raw material of the conflict is on display in all its authenticity, with a sobriety that makes the message all the more powerful. The visitor experience is that of a direct dive into the war economy of the Third Reich. The functional dimension of the site is immediately apparent: spaces calibrated to accommodate trucks, semi-trailers and heavy vehicles, designed according to the standards of German military engineering at the time. The inspection pits, a central technical feature, are a reminder that behind every offensive, every transport of equipment, lies an invisible network of mechanics and technicians. The peaceful, leafy countryside of the Cotentin contrasts with the cold brutality of the reinforced concrete, creating a particularly striking tension of memory. Today, this type of "dark" heritage attracts historians, photographers, Second World War enthusiasts and lovers of industrial heritage who are sensitive to the architecture that history forgot to demolish. Listed as a Monument Historique in October 2024, the Saussemesnil site joins the still restricted circle of logistical infrastructures from the Occupation recognised as national heritage - a decision that underlines the growing importance attached to preserving the memory of total war in all its dimensions, including the most prosaic.
The Saussemesnil site features resolutely functional architecture, inherited from the German military construction standards of the Second World War. The buildings, erected in reinforced concrete and local rubble stone masonry, adopt orthogonal forms devoid of any ornament, dictated solely by operational logic. The garages, organised into single and double units, have wide openings to allow heavy vehicles to enter, with gates high enough to accommodate large lorries and site machinery. The most remarkable technical feature of the site is undoubtedly the inspection pits in the garage floors. These rectangular cavities, which gave mechanics access to the underside of the vehicles, bear witness to the level of technical sophistication achieved by these facilities - a far cry from simple makeshift shelters. The fact that they have been preserved virtually intact, with their coping stones and sometimes their original equipment, is a technical document of the utmost importance for the history of military mechanics. The spatial organisation of the site reflects German logistical thinking, with a flow of vehicles, separate work areas and a location close to the main roads serving the V1 base construction sites. Although the complex was designed for temporary use, its quality of workmanship is characteristic of the buildings of the Todt Organisation, whose structures have stood the test of eight decades with remarkable solidity.
