History
Perched in a landscape of golden limestone plateaux and valleys in the Lot, the Château de Saint-Privat in Flaugnac is one of those discreet jewels that the Quercy region knows how to keep secret. Far from the flashy magnificence of the great fortresses, it embodies the rural nobility of the late Middle Ages, who built on a human scale, but with a sometimes dizzying artistic ambition. What sets Saint-Privat apart from so many other castles in the Lot is above all its chapel. Rebuilt at the turn of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries out of a sense of seigneurial piety, it houses an iconographic painting programme of remarkable quality: Christ's arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane and his appearance before the high priest Anne or Caiaphas are depicted on the choir walls with a narrative force that the centuries have not extinguished. At the base of the walls, ornamental decoration frames these scenes, testifying to the care taken with the composition as a whole. To visit Saint-Privat is to experience medieval art that is still alive, preserved in the intimacy of a sacred space that has not lost its soul. The paintings, some of which were uncovered during restoration campaigns, reveal their colours with a moving sincerity: ochres, Sienna earth tones and deep blues that seem to have come straight out of an illuminated manuscript from the Quercy region. The castral complex blends into an unspoilt rural environment, typical of the Lot causse: open horizons, pale stone villages, silence inhabited by the wind. Architecture
The Château de Saint-Privat reflects the canons of Quercy seigneurial architecture of the late Middle Ages: a blond stone dwelling, sober in its volumes, combining the defensive requirements inherited from the previous century with a growing concern for residential comfort. The causse du Lot provided local limestone that was easy to cut and of a lovely warm hue, which is ubiquitous in regional construction. The roofs, probably made of canal tiles or lauzes according to local tradition, cover simple, compact volumes. The chapel is the most remarkable feature from an architectural and artistic point of view. Rectangular in plan with a slightly differentiated chancel, it illustrates the type of late Gothic castral chapel, with its thick walls pierced by discreetly infilled windows that let in subdued light. It is precisely this lack of light that has contributed to the relative preservation of the murals. The choir contains the bulk of the painted decoration: the narrative scenes of the Passion occupy the upper registers, while an ornamental frieze with geometric or plant motifs runs along the lower part of the walls, creating a base effect that visually structures the liturgical space. The ensemble reveals the work of a high-quality regional workshop, familiar with Gothic iconographic conventions but sensitive to the new inflections that heralded the Renaissance.
