History
Nestling in the commune of Le Teich, at the gateway to the Landes de Gascogne Regional Nature Park and just a stone's throw from the shores of the Bay of Arcachon, Château de Ruat is one of those discreet buildings that harbour much more history than their appearance would suggest. Listed as a historic monument since 1970, it bears witness to a long chain of memory dating back to the great seigneurial families of medieval Guyenne. What makes Ruat so special is above all the symbolic density of its past: for almost two centuries, it was the chosen holiday resort of the Captaux de Buch, the Capetian lords who ruled the Entre-deux-Mers and the Pays de Buch with almost sovereign authority. Here, the masters of the Arcachon Basin came to rest from their courtly and warlike affairs, to enjoy the gentle Landes countryside and the rich natural resources of the estuary. Today's visitor will discover a château that underwent major alterations in the Victorian era, with a composite silhouette that blends Gothic reminiscences with an eclectic 19th-century vocabulary. Although the original stonework is rare, the atmosphere of the place remains striking: the proportions of the main building, the articulation of the volumes and the presence of the surrounding wooded park invite you to take a meditative stroll, in search of the buried traces of the Gascon Middle Ages. The natural setting enhances the experience: Le Teich is world-famous for its bird sanctuary, and Château de Ruat lies at the heart of an area where nature and heritage interact harmoniously. Architecture
Château de Ruat as it stands today is the product of a long architectural stratification, the most visible phase of which was the restoration-reconstruction campaign carried out at the end of the 19th century. The building's profile is typical of the eclectic style favoured by the rebuilders of the period: elongated main building, steeply pitched roofs, reinterpreted mullioned windows and decorative elements probably borrowed from the neo-Gothic and neo-Renaissance vocabulary. The dominant materials are those of the Gironde building tradition, combining limestone ashlar for the structural elements and window surrounds, and local stone for the interior. All that remains of the original 15th-century medieval building are a few elements that are difficult to identify at first glance, having been integrated into the building mass during the 19th-century restoration work. These may be parts of walls, vaulted cellars or reused lapidary elements. This superimposition of historical layers gives the building a temporal depth that the trained eye will be able to decipher. The château is probably organised around a main building flanked by outbuildings, set in a wooded park typical of Gironde bourgeois properties of the Belle Époque, where local species - cork oaks, maritime pines - interact with more exotic ornamental plantings.
