In the heart of Bègles, a working-class commune on the outskirts of Bordeaux, stands a building that reconciles social utility and artistic ambition: the municipal swimming pool and shower baths, inaugurated in December 1932. Listed as a Historic Monument since 1991, the building is an elegant embodiment of the progressive, hygienist ideals that inspired left-wing municipalities between the wars, convincing them that access to clean water and architectural beauty were inalienable rights for the working classes. What immediately sets the building apart is the coherence of its decorative programme: the coloured ceramics produced by the Castiaux frères company give the interior spaces a carefully orchestrated sparkle, while the sculptures by Vignal give the volumes their monumental dignity. Bime, responsible for the paintwork and glazing, completed an ensemble of rare homogeneity, in which each craftsman took part in a collective work conceived from start to finish. Despite the vagaries of time, the experience of visiting the site remains striking. The baths and showers, which are still in use, provide an in vivo insight into the original function of the site: these cubicles, where generations of residents of Béglais came to wash themselves for want of a bathroom at home, are poignant reminders of a daily life that no longer exists. Although the glass roof and the Art Deco water sideboard have unfortunately disappeared, the essence of the architectural design remains legible. The urban setting of Bègles, a town long marked by abattoirs and factories, reinforces the symbolic value of the monument: constructing a building here that was meticulous, ornate, almost luxurious for the most prosaic of uses, was as much a political act as an aesthetic one. The indoor swimming pool and its annex of baths and showers form a functional complex designed as a dignified public service, at a time when hygiene remained a social conquest in its own right.
Architecture
The Bègles swimming pool is fully in keeping with the Art Deco trend applied to public architecture, as it flourished in France between 1925 and 1935. Blanchard opted for reinforced concrete, the material of choice for functionalist modernism, which he clad in a meticulous decorative programme to soften its austerity. The plan articulates three distinct volumes - indoor swimming pool, shower baths and communal hallway - in a legible, hierarchical composition, where functional clarity takes precedence without ever sacrificing aesthetic ambition. The façades bear witness to this concern for balance between constructional rigour and controlled ornament, characteristic of the municipal style of the incipient Trente Glorieuses. Inside, polychrome ceramics by Castiaux frères are the dominant decorative element: their geometric patterns, typical of the Art Deco vocabulary, enliven the walls of the pools and cabins with a chromatic energy that offsets the hardness of the concrete. Vignal's sculptures, meanwhile, introduced a figurative presence, no doubt linked to the aquatic or sporting themes so dear to the hygienist iconography of the period. The lost glass roof was originally the most spectacular architectural feature: covering the swimming hall with natural zenithal light, it gave the bathing area an almost sacred atmosphere, common to the great public swimming pools of the inter-war period in Europe. Its disappearance, like that of the Art Deco buffet d'eau, deprives the whole of some of its original magic, but the bains-douches retain enough authenticity to allow us to grasp Blanchard's original intention: to make caring for the body a dignified and beautiful moment.
