History
In the heart of the Pays d'Aix region, Lambesc's narrow streets and old stone crossroads bear witness to the popular faith of Provence. The Sainte-Anne oratory is one of these discreet jewels: a small votive building erected in the last quarter of the 18th century, it is part of a deeply-rooted architectural tradition in Provence, where every district and every country lane was placed under the protection of a patron saint. What makes this oratory so special is that it belongs to a visual and spiritual culture that is now rare: oratories of this type, erected at crossroads or in front of middle-class houses, were collective prayer points and gathering places during parish processions. The elevation follows a classic tripartite pattern: a moulded base providing a transition to the ground, a smooth or slightly pilastered shaft evoking the classical order, and a crown consisting of a recessed shell, a recurring motif in late Baroque sculpture in the south of France. The pediment or cornice above the niche uses classical forms - cymaise, larmier, modillions - adapted to the intimate scale of the building. A small stone or canal tile roof protects the building from the elements. The statue of Saint Anne, probably made of polychrome limestone or glazed terracotta in the Provencal tradition, occupies the central niche and is the expressive focal point of the entire composition.
