On the outskirts of Montigné-sur-Moine, two tower mills in Les Grands-Jardins stand out against the Anjou countryside with their stone silhouettes — a 19th-century industrial duo where the millstones and Watt regulator bear witness to milling expertise that remains as strong as ever.
To the north of the quiet market town of Montigné-sur-Moine, on the edge of the Anjou bocage that stretches towards the Vendée border, two stone silhouettes have stood side by side for over one hundred and fifty years. The Grands-Jardins windmills are one of those rare architectural duos where two buildings, similar in purpose and era, offer two distinct responses to the same problem: harnessing the wind to grind grain. What makes this site truly unique is the state of preservation of its mechanical innards. Where most rural mills have only their bare walls, the east mill still houses two pairs of millstones and, an unlikely treasure, a Watt regulator. This centrifugal ball device - a revolutionary invention attributed to James Watt and usually applied to steam engines - was here transposed to a wind milling context to stabilise the speed of the millstones. Its presence here testifies to the unexpected technical sophistication of this hamlet in Maine-et-Loire. To explore the two mills is to enter into the intimacy of a vanished craft. The arrangement of the two doors on opposite sides of the east mill evokes the daily movements of the miller, entering and leaving according to the direction of the wind. In the west mill, the remains of the turning square and the long windpipe reveal the precise movements used to direct the cap towards the most favourable gusts of wind. Around the truncated cone-shaped tower, the miller's dwelling and the farm buildings recreate the atmosphere of a small milling operation in the Second Empire. The landscaped setting completes a strikingly coherent picture. The Anjou bocage, with its hedgerows, sunken lanes and skies often shrouded in Atlantic clouds, has hardly changed since the days when these mills were in full operation. Photographers will appreciate the golden hours of the morning, when the low-angled light reveals the textures of the masonry and casts the long shadows of the two towers on the surrounding grass. Listed as Historic Monuments since 1976, the Grands-Jardins mills are part of a rural industrial heritage that is being rediscovered with a new acuity. They are more than just picturesque curiosities: they are witnesses to a silent revolution, the modernisation of the French peasantry in the 19th century, at a time when engineering and tradition were combining to feed a country in the throes of change.
The two mills in the Grands-Jardins illustrate two distinct types of tower mill in use in 19th-century western France. The mill adopts a strict cylindrical plan, with a tower whose verticality is asserted on a basement level in reserve, a raised ground floor pierced by two diametrically opposed doors - a functional arrangement allowing access whatever the direction of the wind - and a milling storey. The interior is remarkably well preserved, with two pairs of millstones still in place on the first floor, as well as a Watt regulator, a centrifugal ball mechanism designed to keep the millstones rotating at a constant speed regardless of the force of the wind. This mechanical piece, directly inherited from the theories of British industrial engineering, is exceptionally rare in the context of French rural milling. The west mill has a three-storey, truncated cone-shaped silhouette, slightly flared at the base in keeping with the building tradition of Anjou, which gives the tower greater stability in the face of the prevailing Atlantic winds. Although its roof has disappeared, the remains of the rotating square - the centrepiece on which the directional cap pivoted - remain, along with the long winch used to manoeuvre the direction of the cap and part of the drive shaft. Local stone, limestone and tufa typical of the Anjou basin, probably made up the bulk of the masonry of the two towers, giving them the golden hue characteristic of rural buildings in the region.
