Built in 1653 from Breton granite rubble, the Moulin de Séréac is a rare seal mill listed as a Historic Monument, which turned its Berton wings until 1950 before being converted into a home.
History
Perched on the hedged farmlands of Arzal, on the southern fringes of Morbihan, the Moulin de Séréac embodies with discreet elegance three centuries of Breton milling history. Set in a landscape of moorland and wet meadows near the Vilaine, this dark granite edifice has braved the Atlantic winds since 1653, the date engraved in the very stone of its masonry - a rare testimony to the precision of the builders of the time.
Architecture
The Moulin de Séréac belongs to the family of mills known as moulins-coquetiers, typical of southern Brittany and the Loire-Atlantique region. This type of mill is distinguished by its cylindrical or slightly frustoconical tower, which is relatively slender, with only the top cap - the "chapeau" or revolving roof - pivoting to direct the wings into the wind, unlike the pivot mills where the whole cabin rotates. The building is constructed from grey granite rubble, a material that is ubiquitous in Morbihan rural architecture, carefully cut and assembled to form thick walls capable of withstanding Atlantic storms. Raised in 1905, the mill now has a taller silhouette than its original configuration, reflecting the technical adaptations made to maximise wind power at an unobstructed altitude. The Berton wings installed in the same year, with their adjustable louvres allowing fine regulation of the surface area exposed to the wind, gave the mill a look typical of the equipment of the Belle Époque. Although dismantled after 1950, these elements had a profound effect on the visible morphology of the tower. Transformed into a dwelling, the interior has been converted into living spaces, removing most of the original milling equipment - hoppers, sandstone millstones, wooden and iron gears - but retaining the stone framework. The mill nevertheless remains a strong visual landmark in the Arzal bocage, its cylindrical silhouette standing out against the Morbihan sky.
