On the gently rolling hills of the Loiret, on the outskirts of the village of Loury, the Épinay windmill stands like a silent watchtower, a fragile vestige of a time when the Beauce plateaux echoed with the sound of millstones and the breath of wind in the wooden wings. Listed as a Historic Monument since 1988, it is the embodiment of several centuries of craftsmanship and mastery of wind power. What fundamentally sets this mill apart from its regional counterparts is its very nature: it is a pivot mill, one of the oldest and purest forms of milling architecture in existence. Unlike tower mills, where only the cap turns, the entire wooden body pivots on a central pivot resting on stone dice, allowing it to face the prevailing wind. This ancestral technique, inherited from the Middle Ages, gives the building a squat, streamlined silhouette of radical functional elegance. The fact that the mill has been fitted with the Berton system, a nineteenth-century milling innovation, bears witness to the desire of local millers to modernise their tool. This ingenious device made it possible to adjust the surface of the wings - made up of adjustable wooden slats - without the miller having to go out in all weathers. A considerable advance in the comfort and safety of daily work. Today, the mill is more a sight to behold than an in-depth visit. The interior mechanism has largely disappeared over the decades, but the tree still bears its spinning wheel, the mill's centrepiece and the last silent witness to the activity that once animated these premises. The Moulin de l'Épinay belongs to the family of pivot mills, also known as "chandelier mills" in some regions: the entire wooden cabin pivots around a central vertical axis, the whole resting on dice of cut stone that ensure the stability of the structure while allowing it to rotate. This system, one of the oldest in the European windmill industry, requires extremely precise carpentry and perfect mastery of wood assembly. The building has two levels. The first level, accessible from the outside, traditionally housed the millstones and the transmission mechanism, while the second, with its lower ceiling, was used for grain storage and various preparation operations. The interior staircase that linked these two areas has unfortunately disappeared. The bed shaft - the key piece linking the wings to the internal mechanism - still retains its original spinning wheel, the toothed wooden ring that transmitted the rotary motion to the millstones. This vestige is a rare example of early milling machinery in the region. The wings, most of which have now disappeared, were of the type with slats that could be adjusted using the Berton system: wooden blinds, similar to shutters, the angle of which could be adjusted from the inside to modulate the angle of the wind, like a roller shutter before its time. A single rod - the shaft carrying the wings - remains, out of alignment and driven into the ground near the body of the mill, a reminder of the mechanical power that once drove this structure. The overall shape, compact and sturdy, is typical of Beaceron mills: low, economical in volume, designed to withstand gusts of wind while offering the best possible grip.
