Nestling in the heart of the Cotentin marshes, the Manoir du Bois de Feugères is home to the oldest outbuildings in the region, a rare example of a Norman art of building that has now disappeared.
Over the centuries, the Manoir du Bois has become part of the landscape of the Cotentin marshes, a living testimony to Norman seigneurial architecture. Far from the ostentatious grandeur of the great mansions of the Renaissance, it offers visitors something even more precious: the authenticity of a manorial dwelling that has stood the test of time without losing its character, creating a harmonious silhouette between two distinct phases of construction, one in the 16th century, the other in the 17th. What makes Manoir du Bois truly exceptional is not so much its main dwelling - though attractive with its carefully moulded openings - as its outbuildings. Built in bauge, an ancestral technique combining clay and plant fibres typical of damp Normandy, they are the oldest of their type preserved in the entire Cotentin marsh region. A rare, almost intimidating title, which gives the manor house inestimable heritage value in terms of the history of rural construction techniques. The experience of visiting the manor house is like plunging into the heart of the Normandy countryside, with its hedgerows and wetlands, far from the beaten tourist track. The manor doesn't try to impress; it reveals its secrets discreetly, at the turn of a well-cut modenature or a hundred-year-old wall of timber that has withstood the dampness of the marshes. For lovers of vernacular architecture and authentic heritage, each stone - or lump of clay - tells a story. The natural setting adds to the magic of the place. The Cotentin marshes, classified as one of France's great wetlands, envelop the manor house in a special atmosphere, changing with the seasons, from morning mists to the golden light of autumn. This symbiosis between architecture and landscape makes Manoir du Bois much more than a simple architectural object: it's an intact fragment of a Norman rural world that's on the verge of disappearing.
The Manoir du Bois has two architectural styles, the result of two successive building campaigns that complement each other without contradicting each other. The oldest part, dating from the 16th century, can be recognised by the quality of its modelling: the window and door frames bear the discreet ornamental care that distinguishes the noble residence from the simple peasant house. These sculpted details, a legacy of Renaissance influence filtered through the prism of Normandy, give the façade a sober, measured elegance. The square-plan stair tower, added in the 17th century, is the most visible feature of the second campaign of works. Its strict geometry and well-proportioned scale blend harmoniously with the original main building, adding a welcome verticality to the overall composition. This type of square tower, preferred to the more medieval cylindrical forms, reflects the classicist turn in Norman architecture during the Grand Siècle. The architectural interest of the site also - and perhaps above all - lies in its outbuildings built of bauge. Bauge is a raw earth construction technique typical of north-western France: clay, mixed with straw or chopped hay, is built directly by hand or using tools in thick courses, forming massive walls with slightly undulating lines. These walls, which are thick enough to guarantee stability and insulation, bear witness to a building method that is closely linked to the geography of the marshes, where stone was rare and clay was omnipresent. Their survival after four to five centuries of exposure to the Cotentin climate is in itself a technical feat and a heritage miracle.
