Nestling in the hinterland of Saint Malo, Le Puits Sauvage is one of those discreet residences that reveal, behind their severe facade, all the power and refinement of the Breton merchant aristocracy of the 18th century. The country residence of a family of shipowners who inherited the name and blood of Jacques Cartier, it epitomises the ideal lifestyle of these wealthy privateers who, between two expeditions, liked to return to the tranquillity of a rural estate within easy reach of the tide. What sets Le Puits Sauvage apart from the sixty or so malouinières listed around Saint-Malo is its resolutely atypical layout. Where its neighbours are built around an isolated main building, Le Puits Sauvage is arranged around an enclosed square courtyard, giving the whole structure an almost convent-like, almost Italian feel, in stark contrast to the usual austerity of the genre. The gable overlooking the road, the two staircases in the wings, the carefully balanced proportions of the facades: every detail bears witness to mature architectural thinking that goes well beyond the simple residential programme. A visit to the estate is an invitation to contemplate. Despite the damage caused by the bombings of the Second World War, you can still feel the authenticity of a place that has always been lived in. Unlike the majority of malouinières, which are organised around an isolated main building flanked by distant outbuildings, Le Puits Sauvage arranges its various buildings around an enclosed square courtyard, creating a protected, hierarchical interior space. The gable end of the main building opens directly onto the access road - an unusual arrangement that gives the complex a strong presence in the landscape. Inside, the layout is just as atypical: two staircases have been laid out in the side wings rather than in the central body, reflecting an advanced functional approach to the circulation of residents and staff. The interior volumes have largely retained their original partitioning and joinery, providing a valuable insight into the aristocratic housing of Saint Malo during the Age of Enlightenment.
