Maison Verte, located in Le Mont-Saint-Michel (Manche), is a Renaissance château built in the 16th century. The monument is currently closed to visitors.
Nestling in the cobbled streets of Mont-Saint-Michel, the Maison Verte is one of the most authentic medieval residences on the Norman island, listed as a Historic Monument since 1938.
In the heart of the labyrinth of narrow streets that wind between the ramparts and the abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel, the Maison Verte stands as a silent witness to the civil life that once animated this mythical rock. Far from the monastic image that is all too often associated with the Mont, this dwelling reminds us that for centuries the islet was a veritable inhabited village, with its craftsmen, merchants, passing pilgrims and families who had put down roots here for generations. What makes the Maison Verte particularly precious is its remarkable integration into the medieval urban fabric of Mont-Saint-Michel. Built according to the constraints imposed by the geography of the rock - sloping ground, narrow spaces, the need to lean against the rock or neighbouring buildings - it bears witness to a local know-how that combines constructive ingenuity and adaptation to the site. Its compact massing, thick walls providing protection from the sea winds and evocative name have all helped to forge a unique identity within this exceptional UNESCO World Heritage site. To visit the Maison Verte is to immerse yourself in the intimate atmosphere of the Mont-Saint-Michel of yesteryear, far from the crowds that throng the Grande Rue. In this part of the block, time seems to stand still: the old façades, mullioned windows and hidden courtyards recreate the atmosphere of a Norman village frozen in its history. Lovers of medieval civil architecture will find it a fascinating counterpoint to the monumentality of the abbey. The natural setting further enhances the magic of the place. Depending on the time of day and the season, the Normandy light plays on the stones and renderings, bringing out the grey, ochre and greenish hues of the local materials. At high tide, when the sea encircles the rock, the Maison Verte recaptures the island isolation that was the daily life of its inhabitants for centuries. A feeling of timelessness that fully justifies its protection as a Historic Monument.
The Maison Verte is typical of Norman medieval civil architecture adapted to the unique constraints of Mont-Saint-Michel. Built of granite from the islet, the preferred material dictated by the local geology, the walls are remarkably thick, designed to withstand the bay's violent winds and the sea spray that relentlessly attacks the façades. The bluish-grey granite of the Mont, cut into rubble stone or blocks with a more meticulously-constructed pattern on the surrounds, gives the whole structure its characteristic austere, mineral hue. The setting on the rock determines the shape of the house: the levels follow the natural slope, creating staggered volumes and interiors arranged on several half-levels. The windows, which are relatively narrow to limit heat loss and reinforce the solidity of the walls, take the form of pointed arches or straight lintels, depending on the phase of construction. The roof, probably covered with Norman slate in the local tradition, takes account of topographical constraints with irregular slopes and valleys adapted to fit in with neighbouring buildings. Inside, the Maison Verte would have been organised around a main hall serving the living and storage areas, with a spiral staircase or a staircase with straight steps linking the different levels. The chimneys, essential in this oceanic climate, are important architectural features, with granite stacks punctuating the volume of the roof. The overall effect is a subtle balance between functionality, resistance to the elements and the aesthetic concerns of the medieval Norman bourgeoisie.
