Maison Piquerel (dépendance de l'Hôtel de la Confiance), located in Le Mont-Saint-Michel (Manche), is a Renaissance château built in the 16th century. The monument is currently closed to visitors.
Nestling in the heart of Mont-Saint-Michel, the Maison Piquerel, an outbuilding of the Hôtel de la Confiance, is a medieval jewel that was listed in 1948 and bears witness to Norman island civil architecture at its most authentic.
At a bend in the Grande Rue du Mont-Saint-Michel, among the tightly-packed facades that seem to compete for space on this legendary rock, the Maison Piquerel stands out as one of the rare preserved examples of medieval civil architecture on the island. A dependency of the Hôtel de la Confiance, it and the Hôtel de la Confiance form a coherent whole whose sobriety contrasts with the mystical exuberance of the abbey that dominates the silhouette of the mountain. What makes the Maison Piquerel truly unique is precisely its discretion. Where the abbey impresses with its verticality and power, the Maison Piquerel speaks in a low voice: its thick walls of grey granite, its narrow openings and compact volumes are a reminder that Mont-Saint-Michel was, before it was a world-famous place of pilgrimage, a lively market town populated by craftsmen, merchants and servants of the clergy. Each stone seems to carry the memory of this medieval daily life. The experience of visiting the area that includes the Maison Piquerel is intimately linked to the rhythm of the tide and the flow of visitors. In the early hours of the morning or late afternoon, when the busloads of tourists have gone home, you can really stop in front of this facade and let your eyes glide over its architectural details: the careful matching of the local granite, the worked lintels, the traces of a centuries-old domestic life inscribed in the stone. The setting is, of course, unique in France. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Mont-Saint-Michel complex and its bay, the monument benefits from an exceptional environment where the low-angled light of Normandy, the movement of the tides and the omnipresence of granite create a unique atmosphere. The Maison Piquerel is a modest but irreplaceable component of this living cultural landscape.
Maison Piquerel is typical of Norman medieval civil architecture as it developed on the rock of Mont-Saint-Michel between the 14th and 15th centuries. Constructed from tightly grained granite quarried from local outcrops and the surrounding Normandy quarries, it boasts a sober, robust façade whose wall thickness - generally 60 to 80 centimetres for this type of island building - betrays the need to withstand the bay's violent winds and possible assaults in times of war. The soberly moulded openings bear witness to the care taken in carving the stone despite the building's primary function. The straight or slightly pointed arch lintels, typical of Norman civil Gothic, frame narrow windows whose vertical proportions reflect the thermal constraints of a dwelling exposed to the elements. The roof, probably covered in Norman slate in accordance with regional custom, contributes to the chromatic harmony of the building complex on the Mont, dominated by the muted greys and blues of granite and slate. As an outbuilding of the Hôtel de la Confiance, the Maison Piquerel is part of a coherent ensemble whose spatial organisation reflects the extreme topographical constraints of the rock: siting on a slope, adapting to the contour lines, adjoining neighbouring buildings, and making the most of every available square metre. This exceptional urban density gives the civil architecture of Mont-Saint-Michel an originality unrivalled in the Normandy region.
