Listed as a Historic Monument since 1928, it is an exceptional architectural reminder of a time when Mont-Saint-Michel was not only a major monastic site, but also a lively, commercial town deeply marked by the fervour of pilgrimages. What makes this building unique is its dual purpose: both a civil residence for the use of lay people and a devotional space dedicated to Saint Sebastian, the Roman martyr who became the holy intercessor against the plague epidemics. In the Middle Ages, pilgrims flocking to the abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel would pass through these alleys, risking their health by being exposed to contagious diseases. So dedicating a private chapel to this patron saint was not just an ordinary act of piety: it was a concrete response to the health scares of the time. Today, the building offers attentive visitors an authentic insight into medieval Norman domestic architecture, far removed from the spectacle of the abbey crowning the rock. The façade in Brittany granite, the hand-hewn openings, the low arches and the compact massing soberly evoke everyday life in the late Middle Ages. The Maison du Moyen Âge is in the tradition of Norman civil architecture from the 14th to 15th centuries, characterised by the extensive use of grey granite quarried in Brittany and Normandy, the material of choice on Mont-Saint-Maurice due to its local availability and resistance to sea spray. The thick walls - typically between 60 and 90 centimetres for this type of building - provide natural thermal insulation, while giving the façade the monolithic, severe appearance typical of Mont-Saint-Maurice architecture. The volume of the building is compact, adapted to the topographical constraints of the rocky island where every square metre of building space is precious. The relatively few narrow openings feature finely worked ashlar surrounds, with straight or slightly broken lintels depending on the use of the room. The presence of an interior chapel dedicated to Saint Sebastian presupposes the existence of a small absidiole or a separate devotional space, perhaps indicated by a sculpted niche or a more elaborate mullioned bay than those in the adjacent domestic rooms. The roof, with its steep slope in keeping with Norman tradition for the evacuation of heavy rain, was probably covered with slate or local schist. This steep slope, combined with the small size of the plot, gives the building a vertical silhouette characteristic of the medieval urban fabric of Mont-Saint-Maurice, where the houses seem to stretch skywards in the image of the abbey that dominates them.
