Like the vast majority of the old buildings on the Rock, it is built in granite, the dominant rock in the bay, with bluish-grey hues that turn golden in the low-angled evening light. The volumetry of the dwelling is sober and functional, typical of Norman medieval civil housing: thick walls providing thermal insulation and resistance to sea-spray-laden winds, narrow openings with carefully carved ashlar frames, and a steeply pitched slate roof. The interior layout, on two or three levels depending on the slope of the land, reflects the ingenious adaptation of the medieval builders to the topographical constraints of the site. The lintels and window surrounds may have discreet mouldings, reflecting a certain aesthetic research in a sober style typical of Norman domestic architecture. The location of the dwelling within the urban fabric of Le Mont gives it a special dimension: set alongside other buildings and integrated into the dense network of alleyways, it contributes to the architectural coherence of the whole of Le Mont, which is listed as a whole. Its urban roots, the quality of its granite masonry and the persistence of its medieval features explain the dual protection it has enjoyed for over a century.
