Maison cantonale de La Bastide, located in Bordeaux (Gironde), is a modern edifice built in the 19th-20th centuries. The monument is currently closed to visitors.
A hybrid jewel of the Bordeaux Bastide, this early 20th-century cantonal house boldly combines neo-Gothic, Art Nouveau and the decorative splendour of Art Deco in a single building listed as a Historic Monument.
In the heart of the Bastide district, on the right bank of the Garonne opposite historic Bordeaux, the Maison cantonale stands like a happy anomaly in Bordeaux's urban landscape. Where classical tradition and blond limestone usually dictate the law, this administrative building dares to mix stylistic references that are rare in the City of Lights: neo-Gothic reminiscences rub shoulders with Art Nouveau arabesques, while the interior is adorned with the lush, geometric ornamentation characteristic of the triumphant Art Deco of the 1920s. Designed to bring together under one roof several functions essential to the life of the district - a police station, a justice of the peace courtroom, a public library, a conference room and municipal offices - the building embodied a modern, humanist vision of local public service. It was at once a temple of order, knowledge and civic deliberation, a programmatic ambition that its architecture does not fail to reflect in its formal diversity. The experience of visiting the building is that of an imperceptible shift between eras: the exterior silhouette, with its play of volumes and façade ornamentation, still belongs to the turn of the century, while the interior enamelled stoneware friezes, commissioned from the prestigious Gentil et Bourdet firm in Boulogne-Billancourt, plunge visitors into the sumptuous and resolutely modern world of the inter-war period. The Bastide district adds an extra dimension to the visit. This long-forgotten part of Bordeaux has undergone a spectacular urban renaissance over the last few years, a rediscovery that has given buildings such as the Maison cantonale a new lease of life and a renewed audience. Seen from the quayside or the nearby Eiffel footbridge, the Maison Cantonale is an integral part of the heritage revival of this rapidly changing right bank.
The Maison cantonale de la Bastide has a singular architectural personality, the result of a design conceived in 1913 but completed in 1924-1925, a temporal tension that is directly reflected in its forms. The exterior façade reveals the stylistic ambitions of Cyprien Alfred-Duprat: strong verticals, a play of bays with elaborate frames and ornamentation that evokes both the plant-like grace of Art Nouveau and the rhythmic rigour of a revisited late Gothic style. This unusual combination in Bordeaux gives the building an instantly recognisable silhouette among the architecture of the Right Bank. The interior is undoubtedly the real revelation of the building. The enamelled stoneware friezes, commissioned from Gentil et Bourdet in Boulogne-Billancourt, display a decorative programme of the highest quality, with geometric motifs, bold colours and compositions that demonstrate full mastery of the Art Deco vocabulary. The sculptures created by Edmond Tuffet's company add a further plastic dimension, combining allegorical figures and abstract ornamentation in a harmonious dialogue with the ceramic murals. The interior layout reflects the complexity of the programme: representative spaces for the courtroom and the conference room, functional spaces for the offices and the police station, each treated with particular care to suit its purpose. The materials used reflect the concern for durability and representativeness typical of public architecture at the time. Ashlar, brick, ceramic sandstone and elaborate renderings combine to create a solid, well-kept building, whose patina over a century of existence has further enhanced its heritage character.
