Set deep in the hills where the Layon meanders through the vineyards, the Logis de la Pinsonnière stands out as one of the finest examples of 18th-century Anjou domestic architecture. Neither a lavish château nor a simple peasant dwelling, it occupies that category so characteristic of the French provinces: the dwelling of country nobility, where elegance is expressed in restraint and correct proportions rather than ostentation. What really sets La Pinsonnière apart from the other residences in the area is precisely this harmony between the building and its surroundings. Set in a listed wine-growing landscape, the dwelling stands in harmony with the Layon hillsides, the world-famous vineyards from which the famous Coteaux-du-Layon sweet wines are made. This interweaving of architectural and living heritage - the vineyards, the troglodytic cellars, the cellars carved out of the tufa stone - gives the visit a rare density. The building's first attraction is the nobility of its stone: white Anjou tuffeau, a porous and luminous volcanic limestone, gives the façade that characteristic brilliance of the great Loire residences. The Logis de la Pinsonnière is a coherent illustration of the codes of classical 18th-century Anjou domestic architecture. The main building, laid out lengthways on a characteristic rectangular plan, is built of white Anjou tufa, the light, easy-to-cut limestone that gives the façades of the Loire Valley their distinctive luminosity. The roof, probably two-sloped with the possibility of a Mansard roof in accordance with the custom of the time, is covered with Trélazé slate - the quintessential Anjou slate, quarried just a few kilometres away since the Middle Ages. The composition of the facades follows the rules of symmetry and rationality so dear to French classicism: the mullioned and transomed windows are regularly arranged, framed by moulded tufa stone architraves. A slightly emphasised central bay, perhaps marked by a dormer window or a slight overhang, links the main facade and highlights the entrance to the dwelling. The outbuildings and farm outbuildings - wine storehouse, barn and stable - complete the traditional layout of the estate, forming a semi-enclosed courtyard, typical of rural dwellings in Anjou during this period. All of this reveals the work of a master mason or a high-quality local contractor, perfectly familiar with regional building practices. The exclusive use of tufa stone, the meticulous application of the fixtures and fittings and the ornamental details bear witness to a demanding commission, concerned with durability and social representation. The gardens, potentially organised according to a geometric plan in the spirit of French gardens, are part of the overall composition of the estate.
