History
Nestling in the market town of Chaudefonds-sur-Layon, in the heart of the renowned wine-growing region of the Val-de-Loire, the former logis de la Basse-Guerche is a rare and discreet example of rural seigneurial housing in Anjou in the 15th century. Far from the splendour of the great fortresses, this dwelling embodies an architecture of intimacy and aristocratic daily life, that of the small seigneuries that dotted the Angevin countryside at the end of the Middle Ages. What makes this monument so unique is precisely its assumed modesty. Where the great residences of the valley rivalled each other with towers and moats, the Basse-Guerche dwelling expressed the quiet solidity of a residence rooted in its land. The local tufa stone, typical of the Anjou region, gives the building its distinctive white light, which changes with the hours, from chalky white to golden, depending on the angle of the sun on the Layon hillsides. In the architectural details - moulded window frames, elaborate lintels, the layout of the main buildings - the attentive visitor will see the hallmarks of the craftsmanship of the 15th-century workshops in Anjou.
