Lost amid the foliage of the Orléans forest, halfway between Lorris and Ouzouer-sur-Loire, the Carrefour de la Résistance is one of the most moving memorial sites in the Loiret. Here, time seems to have stood still since 14 August 1944: the four forest houses burnt down by the German army remain as they were, their blackened walls standing as silent witnesses to a tragedy that claimed the lives of around fifty Resistance fighters and civilians in just a few hours. What makes this site absolutely unique in the French memorial landscape is precisely this lack of reconstruction. While most Second World War sites have been restored or redeveloped, the ruins of the Carrefour de la Résistance have remained untouched for eight decades. The gutted façades, collapsed roof timbers and fire-reddened stones are a raw, unadorned reminder of the violence that befell men who came to fight for France's freedom without warning. Facing the ruined houses, a sober memorial pays tribute to the victims. Engraved in stone, the names of the maquisards and civilians shot are a reminder that the Resistance in the countryside of the Centre-Val de Loire was not a heroic abstraction, but a bloody commitment led by ordinary men and women. Their simple volumes - a rectangular main building, sometimes flanked by a lean-to or shed - reflected the sobriety of their primary purpose: to house the forestry officers responsible for managing the forest. Since the fire of 14 August 1944, the four houses have been in a state of ruin, consolidated by time and vegetation. Some of the gutter walls remain, still bearing the scars of the fire in the dark hues of their stones and bricks. The roofs have completely disappeared, the framework having been consumed. This deliberately preserved dilapidation gives the remains the character of an authentic ruin, without any spectacular consolidation work, which reinforces their evocative power. The commemorative monument, erected in the inter-war period of post-1944 remembrance, adopts the sober and solemn form of the steles of the fighting memory: an ashlar structure bearing inscriptions dedicating it to the victims, in the tradition of French monuments to the dead.
