Nestling in the wine-growing region of Baurech, on the southern edge of the Entre-Deux-Mers region, Château de Lacaussade is one of the most characteristic examples of Gironde seigneurial architecture between the late Renaissance and the Grand Siècle. Its massive main building, flanked by corner towers of contrasting shapes, evokes the transition between medieval fortress and pleasure residence, typical of a provincial nobility that sought to reconcile defence and refinement. What makes Lacaussade truly unique is the legibility of its successive layers. Where so many châteaux have been altered to the point of obliterating their origins, Lacaussade offers the attentive visitor a lesson in living architecture: the original 16th-century keep, the large square tower flanked by its corbelled turret, the 18th-century wings and its neo-classical interior decor all form a coherent whole without ever appearing heterogeneous. The large square tower, flanked by a corbelled round turret, is the centrepiece: designed as a central keep, it imposes its verticality on the overall composition and is a reminder of the site's original defensive function. Eighteenth-century additions temper the severity of the whole. The lower wing, built in 1763, is more horizontal and more open, reflecting a new awareness of comfort and light. The courtyard fences built around 1770 organised the exterior space according to a classical logic of order and representation. Inside, the neo-classical décor of the dwelling - moulded fireplaces, painted panelling, cornice ceilings - completes the picture of a residence that has fully absorbed the influence of Bordeaux architects of the Age of Enlightenment, contemporaries of Victor Louis.
