History
Nestled in the gentle bocage angevin countryside, not far from the meandering bends of the Loir, the château de la Motte-Grollier is one of those characterful manor houses that punctuate the département of Maine-et-Loire without striving for grandeur. Its sober, well-balanced silhouette nonetheless betrays a lengthy gestation: three centuries of building works, extensions and successive alterations have endowed it with a composite architectural character that is at once coherent and surprising. What makes the château singular is precisely this visible stratification of time. The alterations of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries enriched the composition without betraying its spirit. Dormer windows with alternating triangular and arched pediments punctuate the roofline, whilst moulded window surrounds bear witness to the care lavished upon decorative details throughout successive building campaigns. The overall plan most probably follows a U-shaped arrangement or a residential block flanked by lower wings, a configuration commonly found in this type of semi-manorial residence in the Maine-et-Loire.
