As you wind your way along the vineyard paths that wind between the hillsides of the Layon and the banks of the Loire, the Manoir de la Fresnaye stands out as one of those discreet gems that the Anjou countryside has in store for those who know how to look. Listed as a Historic Monument since 1986, this 16th-century building is a sober, elegant embodiment of the most accomplished example of Renaissance manorial architecture in Anjou: a residence that is both functional and representative, part medieval stronghold house, part noble residence. What makes La Fresnaye so special is precisely this balance that characterises early Renaissance manor houses in the Loire: neither the ostentatious magnificence of the great royal châteaux, nor the rusticity of rural dwellings, but an architecture of measure, where every detail - sculpted dormers, mullioned windows, harmonious main building - bears witness to the taste and ambition of a noble Angevin family anxious to assert its rank. The natural setting enhances the charm of the place. Saint-Aubin-de-Luigné is one of the most famous wine-producing communities in the Loire Valley, at the heart of the Coteaux-du-Layon appellation. The surrounding vineyards, ash and walnut trees, which perhaps give their name to the house, create an environment where history blends intimately with the traditional agricultural landscape. For the attentive visitor, La Fresnaye offers a rare experience: that of a manor house preserved in its authenticity, away from the beaten tourist track, where you can still sense the atmosphere of provincial seigneurial life in the 16th century. Enthusiasts of Renaissance architecture, photographers in search of the light of Anjou and walkers with a passion for authentic heritage will all find this a memorable place to stop.
The manor house at La Fresnaye belongs to the family of noble homes built in Anjou during the Renaissance, characterised by an L- or U-shaped plan, a rectangular main building flanked by one or more wings, and particular attention paid to the elevations. The façades, probably in tuffeau - the soft white limestone so characteristic of the Loire Valley, easy to carve and magnificent in the light - display the ornamental grammar of the early French Renaissance: windows with moulded mullions and transoms, roof dormers with triangular or curvilinear pediments, stone stringcourses marking the levels, and discreet pilasters enlivening the corners. The roof, steeply pitched in the Loire tradition, is covered in Trélazé slate, the blue-black slate extracted from the large quarries in Anjou that gives the houses in the valley their distinctive silhouette. One of the most expressive architectural features of the complex is the tower, which probably serves the various storeys and is a heritage of medieval keeps reinterpreted with Renaissance decorative codes. The farm outbuildings - barn, wine press, stables - that traditionally accompany this type of winegrowing manor complete a coherent ensemble that recalls the dual purpose - residential and farm - of these Anjou seigneurial residences. The estate as a whole, with its surroundings of vineyards and orchards, bears witness to the harmonious integration of the architecture into a landscape shaped by centuries of agriculture.
