In the heart of Sologne, the land of ponds and forests that so fascinated the kings of France, the Château de la Ferté-Saint-Aubin stands out as one of the most eloquent residences in the Loire Valley. Built in two major phases between the end of the sixteenth century and the second half of the seventeenth, it elegantly combines classical French rigour with the warmth of local materials - red brick, white tufa and blue slate - in a colour palette characteristic of the great residences of the Sologne region. What sets La Ferté apart from so many other châteaux in the Loire Valley is the exceptional coherence of its ensemble: the main building, the corner pavilions, the monumental outbuildings and the chapel form an architectural dialogue that is enhanced by a system of moats that have been fed by the Cosson for centuries. Visitors crossing the entrance bridge enter a space where time seems suspended, between the paved main courtyard and the moving reflections on the water. The interior is not to be outdone: period-furnished lounges, a reconstructed old kitchen with its copper pots and pans, and bedrooms with elaborate woodwork tell the story of the daily life of a noble family under the Ancien Régime. The collections of earthenware, silverware and family portraits bear witness to a refined art of living, while some of the reception rooms still have their original French ceilings. The parklands, a veritable second monument, weave a landscape story spanning more than four centuries around the château. Remnants of the seventeenth-century French garden - canals, terraces and boxwood embroidery - coexist with the romantic paths and groves of the landscaped park laid out from 1822 onwards. In autumn, when the oak and beech trees set the pathways ablaze in red and gold, a stroll through this estate takes on an almost painterly dimension. An ideal destination for families, history buffs and lovers of historic gardens, La Ferté-Saint-Aubin offers a dense and lively visitor experience, a far cry from staid castle-museums: here, history comes to life.
Architecture
Château de la Ferté-Saint-Aubin illustrates the evolution of French aristocratic architecture between the end of the Renaissance and the height of Classicism. The main building comprises a rectangular main building flanked by projecting corner pavilions, a characteristic feature of the French-style château codified in the 17th century. The elevations play on the chromatic contrast between the locally quarried pink brick and the quoins, stringcourses and window surrounds in white tufa, the soft limestone that is ubiquitous in the Loire Valley. The steeply pitched roofs, covered in Anjou slate, are punctuated by elaborate dormer windows with alternating triangular and arched pediments featuring fine sculpted ornamentation. The outbuildings, whose size almost rivals that of the main building and is one of the distinctive features of the complex, form a vast courtyard of honour accessible from a bridge spanning the moat fed by the Cosson river. This magnified utilitarian architecture - stables, sheds, servants' quarters - testifies to the care taken by the Saint-Nectaires to socially represent their power. The castle chapel, built into the outbuildings wing, has a soberly elegant 17th-century interior. Inside, the reception rooms on the first floor of the dwelling are laid out in a row in accordance with the customs of the post-classical noble house: drawing room, parade room, study. The most precious decorative features are the painted ceilings with exposed beams and joists, the monumental fireplaces with sculpted mantels and the panelled woodwork in the corner rooms, revealing the influence of the French Grand Siècle school in its provincial version, which was less austere than its Parisian models.
