With its winding paths carved out of the Alpine landscape, its natural waterfalls and dry stone walls, this garden boasts a collection of over 5,000 plant species and varieties from the great mountain ranges of the world - the Alps, Himalayas, Andes, Rockies - in a setting that gives you the feeling of walking through the world's hanging gardens. What makes Jaysinia truly unique is this alchemy between scientific rigour and scenic grace. The garden is not a static herbarium but a living organism, punctuated by the Alpine seasons. Jaysinia belongs to the great tradition of Alpine rock gardens that flourished in Europe at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, in the wake of growing romantic and scientific interest in the flora of high altitudes. Its landscape architecture, designed by Louis-Jules Allemand, is based on a series of terraces that follow the natural slope of the land, creating a succession of plant scenes at different levels. The low walls and rockery planters, built of local limestone, form the supporting structure of the garden and reproduce the natural growing conditions of alpine plants - drainage, exposure, microclimate - on a garden scale. The pathways inside the garden are laid out with a skill that combines functionality and picturesqueness: the pathways, sometimes paved with irregular flagstones, sometimes simply of beaten earth, create perspectives, surprises and belvederes over the village and the surrounding peaks. Water is omnipresent in the design: brooklets, pools and artificial waterfalls imitate mountain torrents and contribute to the natural irrigation of the plantations. This aquatic presence gives the garden a fresh, lively atmosphere, characteristic of the Savoyard mountain pastures. The garden covers around three hectares and is organised into geographical zones corresponding to the main mountain ranges represented in the collections.
