The Hôtel Villeneuve d'Ansouis follows in the footsteps of the great aristocratic residences that made Aix-en-Provence famous during the Age of Enlightenment. In a city that was then the capital of Provence and seat of the French Parliament, the nobility of dress and sword competed in architectural daring to erect private mansions worthy of their rank. This one, built in the first half of the eighteenth century, is one of the most remarkable examples still standing in the urban fabric of Aix. What makes this building so special is the coherence of its composition: whereas other Aachen town houses have undergone successive alterations that have blurred their legibility, the Hôtel Villeneuve d'Ansouis retains a rare stylistic unity. The street façade, punctuated by carefully balanced bays, combines with the discretion characteristic of Provençal civil architecture - sober in appearance, luxurious in detail.
