Nestling in the historic heart of Valenciennes, the Hôtel Floréal - also known as the Hôtel de Desfontaine de Fresnoy - gracefully embodies the French art of living of the provincial aristocracy of the North. Listed as a Historic Monument since 1946, this town house is one of the few surviving examples of Ancien Régime civil architecture in a town that suffered considerable destruction during the First World War. What makes the building truly singular is the successful synthesis it achieves between Flemish austerity and French ornamentation: the facades, punctuated by carefully ordered bays, are enlivened by floral sculptures and modénatures that perhaps earned it the poetic nickname of Floréal.
