In the heart of Bordeaux, a UNESCO World Heritage Site for the exceptional coherence of its 18th-century architecture, the Petit Hôtel Labottière stands out as one of the most accomplished examples of French neo-classicism. Built between 1784 and 1788, this private mansion embodies with rare purity the aesthetics of "Greek taste", a trend that swept through the decorative arts and architecture of the Enlightenment, replacing the exuberance of rococo with the rigour of Antiquity. What makes this monument truly unique is the extent to which it has been faithfully restored to its original state. Where so many private mansions have suffered the ravages of successive alterations, this one offers an intact dialogue between the golden Bordeaux stone and exquisitely restrained sculpted decoration: garlands of plants, delicate foliage and pilasters with Tuscan capitals punctuate the façades with a skilful sobriety that does not exclude sensuality. The visit begins with a surprise: the entrance is now through the carriage entrance to the outbuildings, hiding the main building from immediate view. Architecture
The Petit Hôtel Labottière is a striking example of French neo-classicism in its purest form, what theorists at the end of the 18th century described as "Greek taste". The layout, a hotel set between courtyard and garden, is U-shaped: the main building is flanked by two low wings set at right angles to each other, which define a courtyard of honour that originally opened onto the street. This layout, inherited from the French classicism of the Grand Siècle, is interpreted here with the geometric rigour characteristic of the neo-classical aesthetic. The façades are characterised by sculpted ornamentation that is both rich and disciplined: garlands of leaves and flowers, a motif emblematic of the decorative repertoire of the period, run between the bays of carefully framed windows. Pilasters with Tuscan capitals - an ancient order associated with solidity and virtue - punctuate the vertical composition and recall the direct influence of Greek and Roman Antiquity on the architects of the Enlightenment. The rear facade, which was originally the main facade overlooking the garden, is probably the most carefully designed, as was customary for private mansions of the period. Inside, although most of the decor has suffered from the vicissitudes of time, one room still retains its original architectural furnishings: the wood panelling and fireplace bear witness to the care that the client and his architect took with the interiors. The fireplace, the central feature of the reception room in the 18th century, was designed in a neo-classical style in keeping with the rest of the building. The materials used, typical of Bordeaux construction, combine the region's blonde limestone, extracted from quarries near the town, to give the building the warm colour typical of Gironde buildings.
