Nestling in the medieval and Renaissance fabric of Chinon, the Hôtel des Gouverneurs - also known as the Hôtel du Gouvernement - is one of those urban buildings that condense several centuries of aristocratic and administrative history into a few façades. Listed as a Historic Monument in 1963, it bears witness to the political and social status that this Touraine town long held within the Kingdom of France. The upper storey of the gallery is punctuated by three windows with balustraded stone balconies, a decorative motif emblematic of 17th-century French classicism, giving the whole a measured verticality and great dignity. The semi-circular entrance portal is the building's first architectural landmark on the street. Its low-relief pilasters frame the opening and support a curved, moulded entablature crowned with a mascaron - an expressive face sculpted in stone, whose apotropaic and decorative function is characteristic of the Mannerist repertoire.
