A neoclassical masterpiece from Bordeaux, built between 1861 and 1865, this pioneering archive building combines innovative steelwork and avant-garde fireproofing - the only surviving 19th-century building still in use.
Nestling in the urban fabric of Bordeaux, the Gironde departmental archives building is a rare edifice: one of the very first buildings designed exclusively for the preservation of archives in France, and the only one of its generation still in use today. Behind its sober, elegant neoclassical stone façade lies an architecture conceived with an almost scientific rigour, where every detail contributes to the preservation of the documentary heritage. What makes this hotel truly unique is the radical modernity of its design. While most institutions of the time were improvising warehouses in unsuitable buildings, Pierre-Auguste Labbé designed a building entirely dedicated to its mission, combining the central body, the wings and the enclosed courtyard in a remarkably efficient, rational plan. The elimination of all pillars in the warehouses, made possible by a system of cross vaults and interior buttresses, frees up the space in a way that was unheard of at the time. The tour reveals a fascinating interior, where the fine metal framework of articulated beams bears witness to an industrial know-how that had already been fully mastered. The spiral staircases housed in the corner turrets give the wings a discreet elegance, while the reading room - comparable in size to a public library - reflects a design focused as much on access to knowledge as on conservation. The attentive visitor will notice the subtle fire-protection measures incorporated from the outset: the building, isolated on three streets, is surrounded by a defensive crawl space, its storerooms are separated from the main building by cast-iron doors, and wood has been banned from the floors. This concern for protection, exceptional for 1861, bears witness to a heritage vision that could be described as avant-garde. Only one original feature has survived the modern transformations intact: the iron balustrade on the upper level, a precious vestige of the building's original soul.
The building has a rigorous neoclassical composition, organised around a central body flanked by two wings forming a courtyard closed off on the street side by a monumental gate. The limestone facade, articulated over two levels visible from the street and three in total elevation, is deliberately in keeping with the tradition of French private mansions of the 17th and 18th centuries, combining decorative sobriety and institutional dignity. The central body houses the administrative departments and the curator's accommodation, while the two wings on the other side are entirely given over to archive storage. The building's structural ingenuity is revealed in its inner workings. Each wing rests on the masonry of its four load-bearing walls, reinforced on the inside by a series of powerful buttresses that take up the lateral thrusts. This system means that the interior space is completely free of pillars, offering exceptional flexibility for the organisation of the warehouses. Powerful cross vaults, located at the level of the reading room, support the upper storage level. At the four corners, interior turrets house soberly elegant stone spiral staircases. The most remarkable technical feature of the complex is the metal framework made of thin articulated beams, echoing Labrouste's contemporary experiments in Paris. The fire protection system, integrated into the very design of the building, includes the isolation of the building on three streets, cast-iron doors separating the warehouses from the central body and the total exclusion of wood from the floors. Only the iron balustrade running along the upper level remains as an authentic original feature, a precious vestige of the first implementation in 1865.
