History
Standing at the corner of Cours Mirabeau and Place de la Madeleine, the Hôtel de Forbin is one of the most imposing aristocratic residences in Aix-en-Provence. Built in the second half of the seventeenth century and extended in the second quarter of the eighteenth, it is the perfect embodiment of the lifestyle of the Provençal parliamentary nobility, the caste of magistrates and great lords who turned the capital of the County of Provence into a city of incomparable elegance. What makes this mansion truly unique is its successful blend of French classical rigour and the sensual ornamental style of Baroque Provence. The façade overlooking the Cours Mirabeau, a boulevard planted with century-old plane trees, is an unforgettable architectural spectacle: remarkably fine wrought-iron balconies, fluted pilasters framing the bays, and a porte cochere whose curved pediment is adorned with strikingly expressive mascarons. The whole bears witness to the refinement typical of the grand residences of "Provençal Rome". The visit begins as soon as you cross the threshold: the courtyard, with its arcaded gallery and staircase with wrought iron banisters, transports visitors into the hushed intimacy of the Grand Siècle. The proportions of the reception rooms, the high ceilings and the sculpted details of the door frames evoke a sumptuous lifestyle, the traces of which the city of Aix preserves perhaps better than any other French city. Located in the historic heart of Aix-en-Provence, the Hôtel de Forbin enjoys an exceptional setting. Just a stone's throw from the emblematic fountains of the Cours Mirabeau, a few minutes' walk from Saint-Sauveur cathedral and the many other private mansions that dot the old town centre, it is part of a protected urban ensemble whose architectural coherence is unique in France. Its double protection as a Historic Monument - listed in 1990 and then classified in 1991 - bears witness to national recognition of its exceptional heritage value.
Architecture
The Hôtel de Forbin belongs to the great Provençal Baroque architectural movement, which differs from the Roman Baroque in its restrained ornamentation and persistent French Classical references. The main facade, arranged in several regular bays, is punctuated by pilasters or lésènes that give vertical structure to the elevation on two or three levels. The bays, with their moulded frames, are topped by wrought-iron sills and balconies whose scroll and foliage motifs are typical of 18th-century Aachen ironwork. The carriage entrance, the central element of the composition, is adorned with an entablature and a sculpted crown - a broken pediment or shell - in the tradition of the hotels on the Cours Mirabeau. The interior layout follows the canonical plan of the French private mansion: a vaulted passageway leads from the street to the courtyard of honour, where the grand staircase is located. This staircase, with its elaborate wrought iron banister, is probably one of the most precious features of the building, comparable to the fine examples preserved in neighbouring mansions. The reception rooms on the first floor, or piano nobile in the Italian style, had high ceilings with moulded cornices and fireplaces made of fine, golden Provencal ashlar, typical of quality buildings in the region. The materials used are typical of high-ranking Aix buildings: local limestone in a beautiful golden beige, carefully carved for the sculpted parts, combined with carefully treated rendering for the infill walls. The low-sloped roof, as is customary in Provence, is covered in canal tiles, the ochre colour of which blends naturally with the colour palette of the old town of Aix.
