Built in the second half of the 19th century to meet the health and philanthropic ambitions of a rapidly expanding city, the Hospices d'Angers - or Hôpital Sainte-Marie - is one of the most remarkable hospital complexes in Maine-et-Loire. Designed by the architect Édouard Moll, this establishment embodies the desire of an era to reconcile modern medicine, patient comfort and spiritual elevation within a single coherent architectural programme. What sets this building apart from all its contemporaries is without doubt its interior chapel. Far from being a simple functional oratory, it is a veritable museum of Second Empire religious painting: the artists Jules-Eugène Lenepveu, Ernest Appert and Charles Dauban produced a pictorial composition of rare scope, covering walls and vaults with a hagiographic and mystical cycle of great iconographic coherence. Architecture

The facades, probably in tufa stone or local ashlar typical of the Anjou region, have a sober, regular layout, with bays punctuated by arched or straight-headed openings depending on the level, typical of the eclectic vocabulary dear to public architecture in the 19th century. The chapel is the architectural jewel in the crown. Longitudinally laid out, it probably has a single nave or narrow aisles, covered by a barrel vault or coffered ceiling offering a surface suitable for large-scale mural compositions. It was on these surfaces that Lenepveu, Appert and Dauban deployed their iconographic programme: hagiographic scenes, allegories of charity and mercy, and representations of the patron saints of the sick form a coherent cycle that transforms the prayer space into a veritable treatise on pious images. The quality of the pictorial execution, the mastery of colour and the size of the formats make this ensemble one of the most significant examples of monumental religious decoration in the Pays de la Loire region. The buildings also reveal the particular attention paid to circulation and interstitial spaces - courtyards, covered galleries, convalescent gardens - in keeping with the philanthropic ideals of the period, which saw the built environment as a therapeutic tool in its own right.
