In the heart of Sarlat-la-Canéda, a town whose medieval streets attract thousands of visitors every year, stands a building that is often overlooked, but one of sober, touching elegance: the former 18th-century hospital. Far from the splendour of the Périgord castles, this architectural ensemble discreetly illustrates the grandeur of aristocratic philanthropy in action, that of a great lady who chose to devote her fortune to relieving the suffering of the most disadvantaged before retiring from the world. The first thing that strikes you is the coherence of the project: a long classical building, rigorous in its proportions, which contrasts harmoniously with the baroque exuberance of some of the neighbouring private mansions. The late seventeenth- or early eighteenth-century portal, with its flat pillars, cornices, scrolls and unusual inward-curving fire pots, is in itself a work of art within a work of art, a frontispiece treated with a care that goes far beyond the ordinary requirements of a utilitarian building. The interior reveals other treasures. The fire-pot crown, whose distinctive feature is that it curves inwards - an unusual detail that betrays a taste for controlled fantasy - gives this entrance a strong sculptural presence. This portal is a precious example of the transition between Provincial Baroque and Regency Classicism. Inside, the spatial layout follows a rigorous hospital logic: long paved corridors on the ground and first floors organise circulation and serve the rooms. The stone staircase, the centrepiece of the interior design, stands out for the elegance of its wrought-iron banister, whose motifs bear witness to the high standard of Périgord craftsmanship in the Age of Enlightenment.
