As you stroll through the narrow streets of Tarascon, a town that is often associated with its imposing royal castle and the legendary Tarasque, the Saint-Nicolas hospital offers a surprise of a completely different kind: a hospital building that has stood the test of time, from the late Gothic of the 15th century to the classical refinements of the 18th. Listed as a Historic Monument since 1984, this architectural ensemble is one of the rare examples in Provence of an urban hospital that has retained remarkable monumental coherence. What distinguishes Saint-Nicolas from the simple provincial hôtels-Dieu is the clear stratification of its construction campaigns. Each period has left its mark without erasing that of the previous one: the pointed barrel vaults of the flamboyant Gothic period stand side by side with the sober lines of Louis-Quatorzian Classicism, while the 18th century brought the grace of a composed façade and luminous interiors. The attentive visitor can thus read the history of Provençal architecture in a single stroll. The Saint-Nicolas hospital is a composite structure whose architecture reveals three main construction phases from the 15th to the 18th century. The oldest part is Gothic, with pointed barrel vaults and pointed arches characteristic of the flamboyant Provençal Gothic style: a sober architecture, devoid of superfluous ornamentation, where technical mastery takes precedence over decoration. The blond limestone quarried in the Alpilles gives the building the warm, luminous hue typical of Tarascona architecture. The inner courtyard is the heart of the complex. Lined with semi-circular arches on columns with moulded capitals, it bears witness to the classical building campaign of the 17th and 18th centuries. This organisation around an open central space is both functional - to allow air to circulate and separate flows - and aesthetic, inherited from the conventual cloisters that inspired southern hospitals. The main facade, remodelled in the 18th century, features a symmetrical composition with a central portal with a classical architrave and mullioned windows topped with alternating pediments. Inside, the chapel retains some remarkable decorative features: a gilded wooden altarpiece, funerary slabs and a Gothic liturgical pool set into the wall. The large wards, generously sized to meet the needs of the patients, have exposed wooden frames and Provençal tiled floors. The buildings as a whole are organised around a functional programme typical of Ancien Régime hospitals: treatment rooms, pharmacy, linen room, accommodation for nursing staff and a chapel closely linked to the spiritual care of patients.
