Fours " bouteille ", located in Gradignan (Gironde), is a Renaissance château built in the 16th century. The monument is currently closed to visitors.
The Gradignan "bottle" kilns, a unique example of Gironde craftsmanship, have been erecting their bulging silhouettes since the late 19th century, perpetuating a pottery tradition that began in the 18th century on the noble lands of Rouillac.
In the heart of Gradignan, on the outskirts of Bordeaux, two "bottle" kilns stand like sandstone sentinels, vestiges of a craft industry that shaped local economic life for almost a century. Their curved, slender silhouette, reminiscent of the great European earthenware factories, contrasts with the gentle Gironde landscape and immediately catches the eye of both informed visitors and curious walkers. What makes this site truly exceptional is the survival of two intact kilns out of the three the factory had in its heyday. One stands proudly in the open air in front of the main building, offering a direct view of its characteristic volumetry; the other, housed inside a workshop, reveals its refractory walls and pierced hearth in the half-light, a veritable open book on wood-fired stoneware firing techniques. Together, they form an industrial and artisanal picture of rare coherence. Visiting the site is like immersing yourself in the skills of the potters of Gironde. You can still make out, in the layout of the spaces, the movement of the workers between the wheel, the kiln and the mouth of the kilns. The intense heat that prevailed during the firing - sometimes for days on end - imbued the walls and stones with a thermal memory that the blackened plaster render with striking eloquence. Since the site was bought by the municipality of Gradignan in 1982, it has once again become an active pottery centre, combining heritage and contemporary creation. Regular workshops and events welcome amateurs and professionals alike, making this listed site a lively place, far removed from a static museum. The verdant setting of the southern Gironde adds to the appeal of the site, ideal for a cultural and sensory getaway from the Bordeaux metropolis.
Gradignan's "bottle" furnaces belong to a well-defined architectural type that originated in England in the 17th century and spread throughout industrial Europe until the early 20th century. Their popular name could not be more accurate: seen from the outside, these buildings irresistibly evoke the curve of an upside-down bottle, with a flared cylindrical base rising to a narrower, slightly constricted neck. Constructed from carefully matched refractory bricks, capable of withstanding temperatures in excess of 1,200°C during the sandstone baking process, they bear witness to specialised and demanding masonry skills. The exterior surface, marked by decades of wood-burning, displays shades of brown, ochre and black that form a veritable thermal stratigraphy. Inside, the main functional feature of these ovens is their vertical organisation into two levels. A floor pierced with numerous holes separates the lower heating chamber - where the wood was burnt - from the upper cooking chamber, where the pieces to be cooked were placed. This separation allowed the heat and combustion gases to pass through the ceramic pieces in a controlled manner, ensuring even firing. The total height of the kilns, estimated at between six and ten metres according to comparable regional examples, gave the firing sufficient power to reach the temperatures required to vitrify the stoneware. The building housing the second kiln, as well as the associated workshops, are typical of the functional industrial architecture of the late 19th century, with no superfluous ornamentation and the solid construction typical of rural buildings in the Gironde, combining local ashlar, brick and timber framing.
