Nichée dans le bocage morbihannais, cette fontaine votive du XVIIIe siècle déploie ses colonnes de pierre et sa niche fermée d'une grille en fer forgé — joyau discret de la piété populaire bretonne, classé Monument Historique depuis 1928.
In the heart of the quiet market town of Le Guerno, in the south of Morbihan, the Fontaine Sainte-Marie is one of those buildings that you discover almost by chance, and only leave with regret. Far from the great cathedrals and flamboyant châteaux, it embodies another way of inhabiting the sacred: at human level, by the side of the road, in the everyday familiarity of the Breton countryside. What immediately sets this aedicula apart is the sophistication of its architecture in relation to its apparent modesty. The stone columns framing the central niche bear witness to a level of craftsmanship that is rare for a village fountain. The wrought-iron grille protecting the statue of the Virgin is a masterpiece of local ironwork, combining solidity and delicacy in an art in which 18th-century Breton craftsmen excelled. A visit to the Sainte-Marie Fountain is a slow, contemplative experience. You come closer, observe the sculpted details, hear the gentle murmur of the water that still rises from the original spring, and appreciate what generations of pilgrims and villagers have entrusted to this place. The golden lichens that colonise the stone add to the emotion of time standing still. The natural setting enhances the charm of the whole. Le Guerno is a market town in the Morbihan hinterland, a few leagues from La Roche-Bernard and the Vilaine, in a green and unspoilt Brittany. The hedgerows, sunken lanes and grey granite make up a timeless landscape in which the fountain stands as if it had always been there, an integral part of the sacred geography of the area.
The aedicula of the Fontaine Sainte-Marie is part of a sober classical architectural vocabulary, such as was widespread in the Breton countryside during the 18th century. Built from local granite - the stone of choice for builders in Morbihan - the fountain has an axial plan centred on the niche housing the statue of the Virgin. This niche is framed by carved columns, whose smooth shafts and capitals simplify the classical vocabulary to make it accessible to local sensibilities. The wrought iron grille that closes the niche is the most remarkable feature of the building. This type of ironwork, common in 18th-century Breton fountains and calvaries, combines functionality - protecting the statue from the elements and damage - with ornamental care. The geometric and plant motifs that enliven the grille reveal the hand of a blacksmith who mastered the decorative codes of his time. The base of the fountain, into which the spring water flows or collects, completes the functional and symbolic ensemble of the building. The combination of flowing water, durable stone and wrought metal creates a synthesis of Breton folk art that makes this small monument so precious. The harmony of proportions, on a human scale, contributes to the intimacy and special grace of the place.
