In the heart of the Périgord Vert region, the Paradinas estate is home to some extremely rare oval barns, testimony to a unique vernacular architectural know-how at the confluence of three départements.
History
Lost in the green hills of the northern Dordogne, the Paradinas estate - part of the village of Le Rouveix in the commune of Payzac - is one of the best-preserved examples of an absolutely unique built form: the oval barn. From the mid-18th century onwards, farmers in this bocage region, where sheep farming reigned supreme, developed a form of rural architecture whose elliptical logic is unlike any other French tradition. When you see these rounded volumes emerging from the dense vegetation, you know straight away that you are looking at something exceptional. What distinguishes the Paradinas estate from simple agricultural ruins is the remarkable integrity of its ensemble: a former double dwelling house, an oval barn in a good state of conservation, a rectangular barn built according to the same unusual structural principles, and a lean-to extended by a bread oven. Each building tells the story of a self-sufficient farming economy, a life punctuated by the seasons and the care of the herds. A visit to the site offers a complete change of scenery. The silence of the Perigord hills, the schist and quartz of the walls that catch the light in changing ways depending on the time of day, the gentle, enveloping curve of the roofs - everything contributes to producing an impression of organic harmony between the architecture and its natural environment. Lovers of vernacular architecture will find much to contemplate here. Listed as a Historic Monument since 1992, the estate benefits from protection that recognises the irreplaceable heritage value of these buildings. Their geographical area of distribution is so limited - just a few dozen kilometres where the Haute-Vienne, Corrèze and Dordogne meet - that each surviving example represents a unique fragment of a building heritage that is in danger of disappearing. Paradinas invites both the informed visitor and the curious walker to slow down and observe: to observe the logic of a framework designed to be oval, the non-load-bearing walls that envelop without constraining, and the inhabited silence of a farmhouse that has survived two centuries without losing its soul.
Architecture
The central and most spectacular feature of the estate is the oval barn, whose elliptical ground plan is the signature of an entire family of farm buildings specific to this tripartite region. The load-bearing structure is made entirely of wood: six square pillars, planted along the axis of the ellipse, support the crossbeams that hold the purlins and rafters. The crossbeams in the hips close off the ends of the oval, giving the structure its characteristic shape when viewed from above. This woody skeleton is self-supporting, which means that the shale and quartz walls that surround it only act as enclosures and protection against the weather - a particularly modern design in its principle of dissociation between structure and envelope. The roof was originally thatched, a material that has disappeared or been replaced over time. The main gate opens into the centre of the longitudinal façade, creating a characteristic sheltered porch. The adjacent rectangular barn applies the same construction principles to an orthogonal plan: the same separation between timber framing and dry masonry walls, the same logic of long spans freed from the constraints of a load-bearing wall. The dwelling, on the other hand, has a more conventional layout, divided into two two-room dwellings, reflecting a sober and functional rural habitat. The ensemble is completed by a lean-to building extended by a masonry bread oven, the presence of which confirms the character of a self-sufficient farm. The materials used, local schist and quartz on the surface, give the whole a colour palette of greys and blues that blends harmoniously into the surrounding hedged farmland.
