History
Nestling in the Trégor bocage, away from the main tourist routes, the parish church complex of Plouzélambre is one of those discreet treasures that Brittany knows how to hide in its market towns. Gathered around a cemetery enclosed by its original walls, the church of Saint-Sylvestre, its ossuary, its calvary and its fence form a coherent and striking picture, where each stone bears witness to centuries-old popular piety. What sets this ensemble apart from so many other Breton parish enclosures is above all its ossuary, listed as one of the oldest in Brittany. Built in the 15th century, it is striking for the finesse of its exterior decoration: a row of slender columns supports a frieze of small tri-lobed arches, an elegant signature of the Flamboyant Gothic style. Inside, the panelled vault reveals the skills of carpenters who mastered their materials with remarkable economy of means. The church of Saint-Sylvestre has a classic elongated plan, with a sober and compact 15th-century straight-sided chevet and a slightly more slender 16th-century nave. The calvary, set in the cemetery enclosure, and the stone fence that encircles the whole are part of this Breton sacred urbanism, where each element helps to define a clearly delineated space between the world of the living and that of the dead.
