Eglise Saint-Privat, located in Saint-Privat-des-Prés (Dordogne), is a medieval landmark built in the Middle Ages. The monument is currently closed to visitors.
The Romanesque jewel of Périgord, Saint-Privat church houses the remains of a 12th-century Benedictine priory, listed as a Monument Historique in 1862 - one of the first in France to receive this distinction.
Nestling in the peaceful village of Saint-Privat-des-Prés, in the heart of the verdant Dordogne, Saint-Privat church stands like a stone witness to the great medieval monastic adventure. Founded on the foundations of a former Benedictine priory, it offers visitors a breathtaking insight into the Romanesque style of the Périgord, the austere yet luminous style that characterises the region's religious buildings. What sets Saint-Privat apart from the many other Romanesque churches in Périgord is first and foremost its early recognition as a heritage site: listed in 1862 during the first major wave of protection for historic monuments in France, it is one of the oldest protected buildings in the département. This symbolic recognition testifies to the quality and integrity of its medieval architecture. The visit is both intimate and striking. Far from the tourist crowds that invade the great cathedrals of the Périgord, Saint-Privat offers a privileged face-to-face experience with the Middle Ages. Take the time to observe the sculpted modillions, the historiated capitals and the subtle play of light filtering through the Romanesque windows. The atmosphere of the old monasteries is still palpable. The village setting enhances the monument's charm. Saint-Privat-des-Prés, between Ribérac and Aubeterre, is part of the green and white Périgord region, where the pale limestone of the buildings meets the softness of the bocage meadows. An ideal stop-off on the route of the Romanesque heritage of the Saintonge and Périgord regions.
Saint-Privat church is fully in the Périgord Romanesque tradition, characterised by its sober elegance and remarkable mastery of ashlar limestone construction. The layout follows the classic formula of rural Benedictine priories: a single nave, a slightly protruding transept and a cul-de-four apse, a pattern found in many contemporary buildings in the Dordogne-Charente region. The external elevation is striking for its sobriety and coherence. The bell tower, a prestigious feature of any priory building, is probably typical of Perigord Romanesque bell towers, with a square base, twin windows on the upper floors and a cornice sculpted with modillions. The facades are made of carefully-cut limestone, with a golden or white hue - depending on the orientation and the light - that is characteristic of the "white country" of western Périgord. The portals probably retain vestiges of Romanesque sculpture: capitals with stylised foliage or animal decoration, archivolts decorated with billets or saw teeth. Inside, the nave covered by a pointed barrel vault creates an atmosphere of contemplation characteristic of southern Romanesque art. The capitals of the pilasters and engaged columns are the most precious decorative elements of the building, offering a sculpted repertoire of great iconographic richness despite the modest size of the building. The apse, bathed in soft light filtering through its semicircular windows, remains the spiritual and architectural heart of the complex.
