In the heart of the Quercy Blanc region, this 12th-century Romanesque church conceals an absolute treasure: 13th-14th-century Gothic frescoes of rare intensity, with a Byzantine Christ enthroned beneath a semi-circular vault.

Tucked away in the peaceful village of Francoulès, in the south of the Lot department, the church of Saint-Pierre-Liversou is one of those discreet monuments that reserve the most striking surprises. Attached to the neighbouring priory of Molières, this modest Romanesque building hides behind its sober exterior an interior of exceptional pictorial richness, rare in the Quercy countryside. What makes this place absolutely unique is the quality and state of conservation of its medieval wall paintings. In the choir, the barrel vault is adorned with a Byzantine-inspired Christ Pantocrator, his hands open over his wounds, surrounded by the tetramorph - the four evangelical symbols (angel, lion, bull and eagle) - in a hieratic and solemn composition attributed to the 13th century. A few steps away, the walls of the choir display Gothic scenes of great narrative tenderness: on the right, the Annunciation, on the left the Three Wise Men bringing their gifts to the Infant Jesus, probably dating from the 14th century. Visiting the church is an intimate and contemplative experience. The church, with a single nave, has a cross-shaped plan thanks to two side chapels, and the south transept still contains frescoes that are partially buried under the plaster, perhaps awaiting future restoration. The old entrance, opening to the south - a common Romanesque tradition in the region - invites us to imagine the processions of yesteryear crossing the forecourt. The surrounding area adds to the charm of the place. Francoulès, a quiet village on the Lot causse, offers the golden light and open horizons characteristic of the Quercy region. Photographers and lovers of medieval art will find plenty here to enjoy, far from the tourist crowds. A visit to Saint-Pierre-Liversou is a natural complement to a visit to the priory at Molières and the neighbouring bastides of Cahors and Montpezat-de-Quercy.

The church of Saint-Pierre-Liversou has the typical layout of small rural Romanesque buildings in the Quercy region: a single nave, sober and massive, opening onto a choir ending in a semi-circular apse covered by a barrel vault. Two side chapels, grafted onto the nave, give the whole a cross-shaped silhouette that breaks the original linearity of the plan. The former main entrance opened to the south, a common feature of southern Romanesque architecture, before being moved or condemned during subsequent alterations. The external structure, typical of the limestone buildings of the Lot causse, reveals distinct construction phases corresponding to the 12th and 14th centuries. The sober elevation of the walls, pierced by narrow openings, contrasts with the richness of the interior decoration and contributes to the defensive and collected character that characterises many Quercy churches of this period. The interior concentrates most of the architectural and artistic interest. The cul-de-four vault of the apse is the support for the medieval painted programme, the pictorial quality of which far exceeds the modesty of the built environment. The treatment of the side chapels in the transept, whose walls still contain frescoes hidden beneath the plaster, suggests that the original decorative scheme was more extensive than it appears today. The ensemble demonstrates a coherence between architectural sobriety and iconographic ambition, a characteristic trait of Quercy's religious art of the 13th and 14th centuries.
