In the heart of the Bordeaux vineyards, in the peaceful commune of Fossès-et-Baleyssac, the church of Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens stands as a discreet but eloquent witness to ten centuries of religious and architectural history. Built in the 12th century on a hillside overlooking the gentle hills of the Entre-deux-Mers region, it is one of a constellation of small rural churches that make up the real hidden treasures of the Gironde. What makes Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens so special is the rare coexistence of an original Romanesque structure and a late Gothic remodelling carried out at the turn of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries - a period of artistic renewal when the Bordeaux region, still deeply marked by the English presence and the boom in the wine trade, was experiencing an architectural renaissance in its countryside. The reconstruction of the eastern part of the church bears witness to the ambition of the village communities to create a sanctuary worthy of their faith. The most precious feature of the building is undoubtedly the altar with its 16th-century stone altarpiece, preserved in the south arm of the transept. Dedicated to Saint Remède, the thaumaturge saint invoked to cure epileptics, this altarpiece is an exceptional document of popular devotion and the practices of sacred medicine that lasted until the French Revolution. The church of Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens has a Latin cross floor plan typical of small rural Romanesque parishes in the Bordeaux region, with a single nave flanked by a transept, of which only the south arm has retained its remarkable character. The exterior elevation, soberly dressed in local limestone rubble - the blonde stone typical of the Entre-deux-Mers region - reveals the different building campaigns: the thickness and sobriety of the western section and the walls of the nave retain traces of the Romanesque twelfth century, while the eastern section, rebuilt at the end of the fifteenth or beginning of the sixteenth century, adopts late Gothic forms visible in the treatment of the openings and the more careful dressing of the choir. The interior, which was radically transformed in the 19th century with the installation of a plaster vault covering the nave and transept, has lost some of its medieval architectural legibility. Nevertheless, the southern arm of the transept retains the building's most precious feature: a sixteenth-century altarpiece entirely carved in stone. This soberly elegant Renaissance altarpiece is arranged in superimposed registers in accordance with the conventions of liturgical furnishings of the period. The quality of the carving, the finesse of the mouldings and the overall composition bear witness to a workshop of local sculptors with a perfect command of the iconographic codes of the early Renaissance in south-western France. The sacristy added in the 19th century, adjoining the north or south side of the building, completes the structure without altering its overall balance.
