Saint-Martin de Masseilles is a late Aquitanian Romanesque church, an architectural style that borrows its predilection for sculpted façades from the Saintonge Romanesque and its structural solidity from the Auvergne Romanesque. The plan is that of a single nave, characteristic of small medieval rural parishes, ending in a semi-circular apse with a cul-de-four composition that is one of the most carefully designed features of the building. The load-bearing walls, around one metre thick, are built of grey-beige limestone quarried locally in the Entre-Deux-Mers region, a material that develops a beautiful golden-brown patina over time. The west facade features a number of decorative features typical of 12th-century Gironde architecture: a semi-circular portal with voussoirs decorated with billets and interlaced geometric motifs, framed by columns with historiated capitals featuring stylised acanthus leaves and figures. The whole is underlined by a cornice with modillions sculpted with animal motifs, a decorative formula particularly common in the Romanesque style of northern Aquitaine. The squat, square bell tower rises from the crossing or from the facade, depending on the successive alterations, and is pierced by geminated bays with colonnettes that visually lighten the masonry mass. Inside, the nave is covered by a full barrel vault reinforced with transoms, the dominant roofing system in small rural churches in the region at the time.
