Part of the municipality of Cherveix-Cubas, in the Dordogne, it is one of a network of rural buildings dotted around the Périgord region which, although they may not be famous, nevertheless contain architectural treasures of remarkable singularity. What immediately distinguishes Saint-Martial-Laborie from ordinary rural chapels is the presence of an ovoid dome on pendentives, a rare structural solution in the region, which forms the transition between the single nave and the barrel-vaulted choir. This spatial arrangement, inherited from architectural formulas specific to the Romanesque Périgord, gives the interior an unexpected verticality and an almost mystical quality of light, as the eye is naturally guided towards the apse. Architecture

The plan is that of a church with a single nave, a common solution in rural buildings in the region, which favoured functional simplicity over the monumental ambition of the great cathedrals. The most remarkable architectural feature is undoubtedly the ovoid dome on pendentives that forms the transition between the nave and the choir. This technical solution, characteristic of the Romanesque Périgord, allows a square space to be covered by a circular dome thanks to spherical triangles - the pendentives - set into the corners. However, the ovoid shape of the dome at Saint-Martial-Laborie is less common than the classic hemispherical dome, giving the building a distinctive look. Two semi-circular arches support the dome, distributing the lateral thrusts. The choir, meanwhile, is vaulted in a cul-de-four, a quarter-spherical vault typical of Romanesque apses, enveloping the sanctuary in an enveloping, hieratic form. The exterior of the building is marked by a portal with a pointed arch - a slight inflection towards the emerging Gothic style, a sign that construction may have continued until the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries.
